I hope they don't make any changes, if they do decide it's going into production. I love how it looks. I think it's sexy. :D

interesting article that has a bit of info about this vehicle - known as the MX-crossport in europe

link

Detroit, meanwhile, will be entertained with the MX Crossport, described as a new type of crossover SUV with the bearing of a sports car. Mazda people were saying Detroit would be a reaction test bed but a decision to build has been made already with production probably starting in 2006.
4 diferent engines will be available for the Mazda5(new minivan) including 2 diesels for europe so i suspect there will be diesels available for this as well.

official info:

Mazda's MX-Crossport Concept to Debut at 2005 North American International Auto Show

- Mazda MX-Crossport hints at possible future Mazda design direction -

At the 2005 North America International Auto Show in Detroit, the Mazda MX-Crossport design concept will be shown to the public for the first. Also furnishing the Mazda booth will be the Mazda5 and the Mazdaspeed6 to be newly introduced to the North American market.

MX-Crossport, a design concept crossover for Mazda, represents a new direction Mazda is considering as it works to expand its line-up of successful new-generation products.

Designed with the North American market and style of driving in mind, the design concept called the "Advanced Frontier" merges the speedy and athletic image of Mazda's best sports car with the dynamism, practical utility and comfort of ample space to seat four adults. The MX-Crossport transcends the existing categories of SUV and crossovers, and steps into the realm of sports car where the driver can experience the world of sports cars every time they get behind the wheel. The result is a vehicle that takes Mazda and its Zoom-Zoom image into a segment it has never before ventured.

Mazda is scheduled to hold the press conference on Monday, January 10, 2005 from 4:25pm.

I like that new interior. It'll never make it. But I've always liked that really clean look that only exists... in concept cars....

There's also some coverage on www.autoweek.com

Me and the wife have been talking about SUVs and she just said the other day that she wishes Mazda made a nicer SUV that's more shapely like a Lexus or Murano. I showed her a picture of this and got a "I like it!".

Am I the only person wondering about the good of having an SUV that seats only as many people as an RX-8?

who said it seats four? the washu concept sat 6 in three rows of 2. the new Mazda5 minivan seats 6 or 7. three rows of 2 with a 3 seat in the middle row that folds out from under one of the other 2 seats. the mechanism that is used is called a karakuri mechanism which is similar to the one used in the Mazda6 to fold the rear seats. the karakuri seat folding mechanisms were designed by an Origami master.

Our local newspaper motoring section reported it has four bucket seats.

Email Mazda!

I think this an awesome direction for which Mazda should proceed. The Crossport is beautiful, reminiscent of the Murano (yes) but an interior akin to the the luxurious cousin in the Infiniti form. Comparisons to Lexus are merited as well, but I am positive this would become a vehicle for my new family second only to my forthcoming rx-8 (or maybe MS 6). I would recommend everyone who REALLY likes the vehicle to EMAIL Mazda to tell them that this car/SUV crossover SHOULD be built. Enough hits and hopefully, we can effect the change we want. We should also do the same to try to PUSH for our expectations of the MS-8...

well i can admit when im wrong the triplezoom article does state"

The MX-Crossport communicates a sense of motion and speed with its bold exterior design. It represents Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom spirit with its sporty appearance and at the same time provides many innovative elements and a comfortable interior atmosphere with ample space for four adults.
bold added by me. hopefully they will add the folding 3rd seat as an option.

It will most likely share the same platform as the new Lincoln Aviator SUV. It's a modified Lincoln LS platform DEW98.

Similar enough for you?

I love the Mazda one. Damn it's tight. I'd love to have that in the driveway next to my RX-8. Even when they tone that down a bit it will still be nice.
