The new Lincoln is supposed to be built on the 6 platform as far as I remember,
therefore so would this I imagine. I was told by a Mazda Service manager that a new upper line SUV was coming and would have to beleive that this is an almost finished version of it.

Whew! Just in time! I was afraid we were running out of models to choose from.
Yawn, another SUV on the road. Looks like a cross between a Murano and a Vibe.
Maybe you can tell, I am not a fan of the SUV.

I for one love it. This is the car I felt Mazda should have built instead of the Tribute. It's more in line with Mazda's sporting nature.
Unfortunately I can see the following scenario happening: Mazda 5 flops. Mazda then declares US market doesn't want small people movers and therefore won't build the MX Crossport.
The 5 is a mistake. Most folks don't want a small people mover. But enough would like a small, sporty and nimble life-style statement like the Crossport. Please, oh please build the MX Crossport. What a perfect garage mate for my RX-8.

Ukraine would be one of the three "Baltic states" located on the Baltic sea in the NW region of the former-USSR. Nearby neighbors would include the 3 countries of the Scandinavian penninsula.

I was reading Automotive News recently and there was a big article on Mazda with an interview with it's Japanese president . Exciting and a little disappointing.
Most of what he presented about their future in relation to the US was concerning SUVs. When asked how they planned to increase US market share from 1.6 percent he refused to give a goal in percentage but instead stated that they intended to have 3 new SUVs including a revised Tribute and an even larger one.
They stated that they presently have 50% shared product with Ford but in some short time frame that would increase to 80%. Scary! I know how much Mazda has benefitted from them but I also recognize ill-effect of their relationship. Their trucks have lackluster, continuously declining sales, the Tribute had more recalls than I remember seeing in a long time, their were quality issues with them in unusual quantity. They failed to realize that a lot of their US market problems relate to quality and service or the lack thereof. Their dealership structure alienated technicians, MNAO alienated their dealers. When things weren't going well people just pointed fingers at each other. Ford installed non-Japanese leaders to head up Mazda in Japan and kept on changing them. They made some great decisions that have resulted in operating in the black but some glaring things just seem to be overlooked. Did anyone notice how much damage the Ford CD4E transmission was causing to Mazda's reputation (Found in the 626 and MX6 4 cyl from 94 to 97 and the last 626s up to 02). So many people when speaking of Mazdas say "Aren't their transmissions bad?". Rotary engine life, especially 93 to 95 didn't help the reputation much either. I doubt 60% made it to 100k on the original motor. That type of thing is unacceptable, as a matter of fact it's suicide.
Mazda needs to sell 3s and 6s. The 8s can't afford to have tarnished reputations, so flooding and excessive fuel consumption need to be addressed now before it's too late. The MPVs need to be advertised (Not a bad vehicle at all), the new MX5 had better capture the hearts and minds of millions like the first one did when it arrives. A new RX7 that's not too expensive or a technological nightmare would be cool. I wish Mazda had a hand in designing and making their own trucks and they should go ahead with this concept vehicle (MX Crossover). I just wish they had clearer vision and weren't so behind the curve so often (They aren't working on any piston engined hybrids.)
Please excuse my rant and many errors. It's really late.

Why make a hybrid if you're trying to push for hydrogen-fueled rotary-engined cars? I remember reading somewhere (probably in one of my rotary mags) that the current test mule is "flexible" so that it can run on boht hydrogen and gasoline... whichever is available at filling time. Fuel cells aren't ready, but don't they use hydrogen too? With the asses at CARB going at the rate they car, fossil fueled cars will be outlawed and current battery technology isn't going to cut it...
As far as Ford trucks go... never owned one, neither has anyone in my family. I can say that my friend's Ford Ranger seems to be bullet-proof as was his mom's 80-something Taurus. THey treat their cars like ****... I wonder if they even change the oil yearly... BUt those cars just keep running. Sounds decently reliable to me. Truck sales... the Ford F-150 has been the number selling vehicle in the US for awhile now. I certainly would be one of those before a Dodge Ram and the Chevy's are like Toyota... uninspiring. Looks like Ford for me...

President issue... I can say a lot, but I dunno how if I should post it here... a bit O.T. So I'll just say this... all of our top management is dumb, because only the useless members of your team who spend all their time kissing *** ever seem to get promoted.

Japan8 Merry Christmas to you,
I like you and think you always have intelligent things to say; as is the case here too.
My point with the hybrids is look how far behind we are (Mazda):
Toyota and Honda are so advanced with their hybrids and are selling the technology. They can do hybrid versions of everything they sell if they care to. Mazda definitely has no plans of doing rotaries in multiple vehicles (We'll be blessed if we see 2 or 3 vehicles with the wankel). Ford, like the other American manufacturers is lagging terribly behind in the gasolene electric hybrid war, playing catch up by purchasing technology after the fact.
As for Ford trucks, I agree with you, it's what they excell at (In terms of sales volume and turning a profit). Unfortunately that doesn't translate to Mazda truck sales. Mazda can do a better equipped, better looking version of the same trucks for less money and still see sales slump. Ford truck buyers are not necessarilly Mazda truck buyers.
If I might take this a bit back on track, I'm quite excited by the prospect of this concept vehicle. I think it's really good looking. Will it come to market soon enough? . We'll see. Then there's the Mazdaspeed 6. I think the president of Mazda is even underestimating the effect that this car is going to have. I only wish it wasn't so heavy.
Peace to you all and to all a wondrful day.
Paul.

I can definitely see your point. In the short term both Mazda and Ford are getting left in the dust. Betting the whole farm on the long term strategy paying off is a big risk... too many variables. It would be a good idea to release one major hybrid vehicle for now...
Exactly... trucks are what Ford (and admitantly GM) do best. They are HUGE profit makers for them. As far as Mazda goes... it's not a truck company. Hell Toyota is accepted for SUV's, but still not so much for full-size trucks. So Mazda has a hard sell there, but with the right model... something that is purely Mazda DNA may have a much better chance than just a rebadged. Besides the rebadged thing... that's a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury and GM (especially GM) thing. And we've seen how well that works. Something more along the lines of the Mazda3/Volvo S40 is what they need to concentrate on... repackaging... reusing the platform only and designing a body, interior, and tuning to fit the brand's image and needs. This SUV could be that answer for the truck market for Mazda. This sucker needs the fast track development process and to be dropped on the market ASAP.
As for the MS6... I agree. I wish it was a bit lighten, but it will have a bigger impact than they expect. If it has the space and performance of a Legacy GT or better, but can handle better too... I'd say Mazada has a winning package.

An update. Don;t know if this old news already as I'm too lazy to read through this entire thread. Regarding the Crossport at the Detroit auto show, a Mazda executive commented "the MX-Crossport is not destined to become a production model but it does suggest the direction Mazda is headed as it redoubles its focus on the U.S. market." Although they haven;t released much detail (engine, cargo capacity, etc), design-wise I think this is a hit and they're making a big mistake by not moving forward with it.

Thanks Bern but that's a press release that's been available for at least a month. According to a quote from Mazda within the past day or so, it will not become a production model.

Looks good
Saw the car at LA Autoshow -- very hot... Also saw the Mazda 5 (mini MPV), also pretty cool. Last, I saw the the new Shinka RX-8, liked it overall, except for the Shinka emblams on the B pillar...
