welcome to th ewondeful world of owning a rotary engined car. i've owned 26 RX-7's over the last 10 years and every one that ran that i've had has backfired here and there. the early rotaries (79-80 RX-7's) with the thermal reactor are backfire champions. between nearly every shift there is a little pop or a spit. i kinda like it.

Yeah, the crackle is totally a signature of the rotary engine. If you put a midpipe on there, every crackle has a chance of being a flame! I recently got a high-flow CAT w/ my Agency Power exhaust and people have seen flames from my tips Also backfires sometimes on deceleration from the high RPMs. <3 rotary.

my wife says the same thing. i'm down to 7 RX-7's and dropping. i'm going to buy an RX-8 here shortly and sell off most of my 7's and my 92 Camry SE and my 95 Ranger and one of my 88 F-150's..too many cars. i get them cheap and fix them up. just picked this gem up for $200:
66K original miles. car is totaled but it will live on in other people's 7's. i part out cars until there is literally no nut or bolt left on the car...

Nah, we answered him.
Stock exhaust.
I never backfired ONCE with stock exhaust. Or you could only drive upto 4000RPM! I mean, your engine and cat would clog with carbon and you'd need a new one, but it won't backfire atleast! Then you can get a car that you can drive without whining about certain traits.

You can buy a different car... or a different engine... but I cant see why that would be worth it... why are you trying to get rid of it?
