I am trading in my RX-8
Well guys, its been a good run but it's time for me to trade my RX-8 for a Jetta TDI. At 41, I've decided to build a '66 AC Cobra kit car and I only need one sports car in the family. I also need a car that is better (read - more economical) for my daily commute.
Thanks for all the great advice - so long all!

At least do another member here a favor and offer to sell it for trade in value, if it's all the same to you. I can't do it now, but maybe someone else can. They're gonna give you $15-$20K for it on trade in unless they get more back on the sale of the new car. I'd love to get one for 15K or 17K when I'm ready, maybe I'll find someone off lease then. Trade-in's always make it hard to see the real deal you're getting, and are why I didn't do it the last two times. But make sure you have it sold, selling used cars over $5000 is really hard because few people have cash and even fewer know how to get financing on their own.

These guys make one of the best kits I have seen. If you haven't already, take a look.

PM me, I will give you the stories they won't. did they tell you the newer ones need a special oil that you can only get at dealers, $70 oil changes, twice the maintence of gas, how about the carbon issues that are not covered and are $1000 repairs at around 15k miles

You are comparing an already completed car which is much more $$$$$ then a kit that needs to be assembled. I've seen the Superformance cars and they are real nice but that defeats the purpose of building a kit.

VW quality is garbage. they break down all the time, you think youre saving money off the better gas milelage but in reality the cost of ownership is more due to the problems and cost of fixing them in both time, money and oppurtunity costs. the latest JD power long term reliability ratings has VW at the very bottom. goto autoweek.com or jd power's site and do a search your self. If you want a good daily driver I urge you to consider something else instead, there are plenty of reliable cars with great utility and gas economy out there. VWs and Audis are not amongst them.

I had a '88 Golf II which I bought with 10K kilometers and sold it with over 200,000 kilometers 15 years later. During this time, the car never ever left me stranded and it did not have any significant problem, just the regular wear and tear items. This period also included years when the car was driven only about a month per year, otherwise stored (in a tent-garage, not a real one). That is usually not good for a vehicle, but it still didn't develop any problem.
This happened in Europe, in a country with subpar roads. Say whatever you want, but I really believe VWs are good cars and I only had good experience with them. Audi is even better.
It's possible that I was just lucky, but I don't think luck can last this long if the manufacturer indeed had serious quality problems.
