I would never buy a car on a whim. And if I went to test drive a car on a whim just for the sake of driving it isn't the salesperson exactly right in not letting me drive it? I wouldn't be offended if all he did was guess correctly my motives.

And you're thinking that being nice always leads to better business and more money which is untrue. Being a jerk to kids that you think have no intention whatsoever in buying the car frees you up to sell cars to people who will. I'm not saying they're always going to be correct in their assessments I'm just trying to make a point to all you sensitive people. Think about it from their point of view instead of getting all pissy.

Play the game (i.e. - call ahead first for example) or let it play you (i.e. - let it get to you). That's what it comes down to.

I agree South Motors SUCKS! Several bad experiences there.

When I went to purchase my 8, i went to Marlin Mazda (now known as Lehman Mazda). The salesman i got knew NOTHING about the car. He proceeded to try and sell me a used Yllw 8 and said that the car was "new" (though it had 500 miles) and that it was never titled (yet someone drove it home and returned it). Said the color was "rare". He fed me some more BS, I then proceeded to school him infront of everyone in the showroom that the Yellow infact was not a rare color but a discontinued color being replaced by the whitewater pearl. I also said that the Manual 8 does not come with 16" rims it infact comes with 18" rims. So if he thought he was going to pull over a fast one on a girl who didn't know her stuff he was highly mistaken. I said to him, you should learn about the car you are trying to sell instead of giving misinformation.

There were a couple people in the showroom who were rather shocked about it all! I'll never forget their faces. I walked outta the showroom with my parents in tow and bought my car 2 days after from Gunther Mazda!

Saturn^^ problem with your post is. im 30yrs old, i pull up in a 02 s2k that is my wives car. i ask to test drive a 06 s2k, i get told no because i have to make a appointment to drive one. then he comes up with antoher reason stating that ppl cant drive their new s2k because honda watns to keep low milage. now would you not think i have a potential to buy a newer version of the car that me and my wife already own?

now i understand they have policy with the s2k. but if you the sales person seen me drive up in the same model car but different year, i would think they would at least allow me to test drive a new version car. i mean wouldnt they want to keep customers coming back to the same car company? i hate hondas with a passion, but i give S2k a big thumbs up. any how off to lunch.

oh as for the appointment excuse, i called when i got home to make one. the sales person on the phone told me their is no such thing as appointements to test drive the s2k . but any ways i didnt let it ruin my day.

I'm not telling you that their assessments are founded in logic. I'm just saying that if you get all huffy about it and then get all proud when you come up with a biting retort that you can tell everyone on the Internet about then you're a very insecure person.

If your goal is to get a test drive how does telling the salesman "look at this check in my hand -- I was gunna buy from you but now I'm not -- j00 g0t s3rved y0!!!!!11!" help in any regard whatsoever? It, in fact, does not and is solely intended to make people with fragile egos feel better after someone didn't "respect" them.

A professional salesperson is taught two things from the very first day.
1. How to ask questions to "qualify" a customer and...
2. To NEVER assume that ANYONE they see CANNOT buy a car.

Salespersons who have forgotten rule #2 have done so because they see so many people per day that they can afford to be idiots and ********. I worked in car sales in a town where we were lucky to see 5 valid customers per month! Someone who survives such a position can go to a big city and make a killing. Folks in the first category can't go anywhere else other than the big city and make a living.

We should take every possible opportunity to tell such people that they are completele idiots.

Bah...I'm 23 and still get the same ****. Don't feel bad. Just because I have long hair and look like a skater/rocker I gotta put up with your ****!? I don't think so...go somewhere else and find someone who won't pull that ****. If I don't feel welcome within the first 5 minutes...they lost my business.

Spot on, My uncle has been selling cars for over 30 years. When I called him to tell him what happened he cracked up, put me on speaker phone and called every sales man/woman into his office. Asked me to tell them my story and then reminded them all if he ever see's that happen they will be fired on the spot.

I have worked as a floor sales man for a few years. The number 1 thing you have to do when someone walks in is say "hello, my name is ______ can I help with anything today" (smile) NEVER PROFILE

Then again, down here atleast, most people wont even hold a door open for you.

I wish there was more people like your uncle who worked in dealerships. Before I brought my 8 I was thinking of getting a 350Z despite my love for rotaries. I kinda fiqured later on I'll buy a used 8. I go to the Nissan dealership I'm greeted. I tell the salesman what I'm looking for and we start throwing numbers back and forth. We'll he immediatly starts to profile me. He asks me how can I afford a new car, do I work, where did I get the money for the down payment, do I have a criminal history etc. I got up and walked out. It was so humiliating. This really left a bad taste. But I have a new 8 so its all good.

I get the same **** from dealers around here. The only time I'll set foot on a car lot during business hours is because I'm intending to make a purchase at some point (even if I haven't exactly settled on that one particular car). If I'm walking around looking at cars and not getting any help, that's not my problem. There are lots of other car dealerships and manufacturers that would love to take my money. I think these guys fail to realize that even kids are capable of generating an impression of the dealership and the associated automaker based on their initial experiences. I can remember all the dealerships and brands that blew me off as a teen and I'm sure as **** not going to give any of them my future business.

I remember looking at a Celica at Gettel Toyota in Sarasota back when I needed a new car in high school. I was walking around the lot for 15 minutes while a crowd of about five guys gathered outside the door to watch me walk around. I even found one car I liked and stood around it for an artificially long time looking the thing over top, bottom and even under. I did everything I could to try and get their their attention aside from calling one of them out there, but they all just stared at me like a big mob of idiots.

Not my problem though, I ended up with a Protege5, and learned that I'm a hell of a lot better off with a Mazda any day. Doubt I'll ever buy a Toyota now, seeing as I now have a rather gloomy view of their customer service, plus their cars are the suck. (As you may be able to tell, I haven't had very many good experiences with Toyota) They probably could have created a new, loyal customer that day. Whoops.

Meh. Just go to the s2k forums and ask around for a good dealer. I also considered an s2000 before I got my 8. Even with used ones, the some of the dealers acted like they were made out of diamonds and fueled with uranium. Which is odd, considering how cheap and slow they are compared to something as commonplace as a Corvette.

I'm not knocking the s2000, in fact I love them. But considering that a used 3-year old rattley s2k was $3k more than my brand new 8, and a new s2k was ~$10k more, I couldn't justify spending the extra money to get one.

Cliff notes:

1.) Guy goes to test drive and S2000 with little intention of buying.

2.) Guy gets shots down.

3.) Another guy who owns an S2000, with little intention of buying a new S2000, tries to test drive an S2000.

4.) He gets shot down as well.

5.) The whaaaaambulance arrives to pick up the injured non-buyers that were trying to waste the time of some salesguy.

6.) Those two guys waste the time of a bunch of people on a car forum.

reply for number 3.
So Ike, if that day when i wanted to test drive the S2k and i had intention to trade my current for a newer one (even though the thought didnt go thru my mind), and i get shot down for a test drive. i think i have a reason to be pissed. i guess that is the difference between customers service in the US vs Japan. at least i know if i walk in to a lot, i have a 100% knowing that they will allow me to test drive their car, and i know they are not going to treat me wrong regardless if im going to buy it or not. because in japan number one rule is GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

i dont test drive cars that i can not afford.

reply to number 5.
so you are making up excuses for these ppl now. they are getting paid to be sales person. they are there to sale you something. if someone is going to try to sell you a item. would you not like to try it out before buying, do you even RESEARCH and yes test driving is part of the RESEARCH PROCESS, or are you one of those sheeps that buy something if someone tells you its good? Bottom line is there is no excuse for bad customer service.

reply to number 6.
how did i waste time? the Op made a topic that i can relate to, i mean whats for the forum for then? if you cant reply to topic that is being posted. and also you posting this thread , was that pretty dumb on your part? i mean its a thread you didnt care for but i guess you had to do your daily showing of your **** uh? you cant go a day wiht out doing so. but im sooooo sorry Mr. Uber Ike, i promise this will never happen again.
let me bow down to you and hope you forgive me for not giving you the middle finger salute.

reply to number 7. maybe you should go out on a date, and no your right hand it not a true date. then maybe you wouldnt be so negative all the time. but hey if your right hand betty is enough for you then so be it.

dealers are human..and they will profile like any salesperson.

walk up there wearing a nice outfit, driving a decent car, and they will let you drive whatever you want. i went to the chrysler dealer in my suit, they asked enough "qualifying questions' to know what I did for a living, knew I could afford the car, and let me drive whatever I wanted. I ended up not liking the cars...but the point is...if I had been 16 with my baseball cap on backwards they would have blown me off... now i was there to look at 300 SRT8 and Jeer GC SRT8s...

when I was 19 I went to a mazda dealer to look at a miata and i told the saleguy my DAD was buying the car fo rme, and the guy let me take the car off the lot by myself...for the entire afternoon...

if they think you are there to joy ride and are not for real, why should they waste time on you... they have to make a living.

if you are legit, honest, and really have a chance to get the vehicle..most dealers should bend over backward to help you out..they want to sell them...

I was 16 or 17, and I've never been poorly dressed. I can't remember specifics, but at that point in time, I was probably wearing a polo type shirt with some casual khakis. They chose to ignore based on simple age alone and that's a pretty damn stupid thing to do.

I'd understand if I was dressed like some hobo, but I wasn't. Not my problem though, they're the ones that lost a potential sale.

Just find another dealer and test drive the car. Honda dealers are pretty bad at customer service, just like the Mazda dealers. One of the dealers in my area told me something similar... "you know, we don't let people test drive if they are not very serious about buying the car". That management recently went out of business. There were other dealers who just handed me the key - no questions asked. Don't let the bad customer service keep you from considering the car. It is awesome!

i was at a honda dealership sat to buy a air filter for my roomates civic hybrid. it is a big one... first thing i found out was that they play movies with surround sound in dealers...

second when i parked my rx8, the sales guys wanted me to go for a ride in the s2000.

i have driven the car.. it is a very nice car, and that was 5 years ago..

one of the things i do to guarantee i get a test drive is let the dealer know, "i'm interested but i'm definitely not buying today. If you have another customer who is ready to buy feel free and take care of them first". I usually end up in whatever i want right away.

The GM from the dealership called me on saturday appologizing profusely, pardoning his salesmans ignorance, and begging me to come in for a test drive.
I told him that I appreciated his effort and professionalism, and that its a shame he doesnt hire salesmen with the same buisness qualities, and that Im not buying a car from his dealership.
You know they seem pretty Fing desperate to get me back in there to do a test drive now that they realize I was serious. Too bad for them, they coulda made a nice sale.
