It's been decided - going from 8 to corvette

Hey guys, I made the decision a couple weeks ago to part ways with my 8. This certainly isn't a "this car sucks cause it wasn't what I thought it was" thread. I love this car just as much as (or more than) the day I got it. It'll be sad since I've had a lot of good times with my car.

However....I'm plenty excited too.

Ever since I was a kid my dream car has been a corvette. I had planned on dumping a bunch of money into modding my 8, but it looks like I can sell my car and pay less than half that mod money to get a C5 corvette. With heads, cam, exhaust, and tune I plan to see 450whp N/A on that car. Woohoo!

I plan on listing my car on autotrader later this summer, and buying my new one shortly thereafter!

PS: This board is a lot more interesting than the corvette board, so I'll be sticking around.

That's why I'm still around! I'm more "at home" here and find it's easier to get questions answered, etc. on this site vs. most 350 sites. That and one particular 350 site actually charges its members to post a custom Avi, etc.

Don't get any funny ideas BOOSTD 7...

And you are right! For me, I have never appreciated the 8 more than when I "switched" cars. I can see the car for what it is, instead of trying to make it do "everything". And it is great at what it does!

Good luck. It's a darn nice upgrade. I have come close many times to pulling the trigger on a used Vette. For the price I paid for my S2000, I could have gotten a really nice used Vette, but just can't do it, even though it's a much better car with a boatload more power and potential. Perhaps when I'm 40-50 the Vette will be the car for me. I drool over this Yellow leftover 06 convertible that's sitting at dealership I drive by, but the car just isn't for me YET. It's still too expensive, and I'm not old enough yet.

Congrats! My dad had a '98 Vette and really loved it. I love the 8, but if you're into HP and torque you'll obviously have a great time!

That's funny... the two favorite cars that I test drove were the RX8 and the C5 Corvette, but the Corvette's repair bill and the fact that it will be unusable in the winter here (you try and control a 350 V8 on snow with a 3.7" ground clearance) is why I'm going with the RX-8.

I love the Vette, but I can't justify buying an '02 or older for the same price as an '06 RX-8. The repairs are ridiculous!

old enough yet? why do you have to be old to drive a vette.. my buddy is 22 and owned a c5 z06...headers, exhaust, intake and tune and was making 400whp... heres one of the many pics he had... ..my car is right beside his... you can kinda see it

good luck with the vette....i was about to drop the hammer on a 01 z06 before the rx8.. but i woulda had to drive quite af ew hour to get it.. and this rx8 was 2 minutes away from my house so.

Yep, totally understandable. Since I'm right near DC, I'm sure snow is a much larger problem for you all the way up there in Minnesota.

As for the repairs, my friend's dad is a mechanic with his own shop, and doesn't mind giving me a discount.

And Blueyes, I'm not getting a Z06 for a few reasons.

1. It's cheaper not to
2. I like the targa top of the coupe
3. I want an auto. I know, it's blasphemy. But getting 450whp from an auto C5 isn't all that hard. Recently Cartek got something like 750whp from an auto. So it can be plenty fast, and I won't want to kill myself in traffic (DC has the second worst traffic in the country to LA).

Yep, I really like the look of the vette with the targa top. Sorta like a convertible without sacrificing any storage space.

I love Vettes but DO NOT get an automatic. My parents had one and even though it handled well, it was always downshifting on me mid-corner - I almost lost it under just moderate acceleration a few times (which was the most I ever pushed it, being that it wasn't my car). I was terrified of unleashing that car - I would have been glad to do it in a stick shift, but that thing was just too unpredictable.

That's pretty normal for the tail to kick out a bit. Especially on stock tires. I'm not too worried about it. But thanks for warning me Rhawb.

I like the vette but I think there may be better cars than that for a reasonable price.

Choices choices choices...........

vette = Best bang your buck..
theres other cars that might offer mroe of one thing and less of the other thing.. but for a great package. by-far, best bang for your buck..
Great looks, great handling, lightweight, easy to mod, great power

I've thought about doing the same for a long time. I just can't stomach the insurance.

Insuring a 2005 C5 Corvette would be substantially less (15%) to insure for me than a 2006 or 2007 RX-8.

Yeah, it has the potential to be pretty awful. I don't think it should be too bad for me, though. My mom is nice enough to put my cars under her name until I'm 25....that, plus we have the best insurance company out there. She's also nice enough to pay for that insurance. I don't think it's fair to expect her to pay the extra costs of having a vette, so basically I'm going to pay her the difference in insurance. Also, I'm obviously paying for the difference in price between these cars.

Ok time to put on my "spoiled kid" flamesuit. There's always someone who doesn't like the idea of parents paying for my RX-8

PS: Glad everyone agrees with me on the bang for the buck issue!

Then I guess your insurance company is not pwning you at all. The opposite was true for me when I called for a quote on a WS6 TransAm. I assumed the same for a Vette.

I guess if I want a Corvette it's great. If I want an RX-8 it sucks giant *****.

If I want an Evo (which I do) I get screwed just like everyone else. What can you do?

hmmm corvettes are generally driven by older people, id imagine its insurance rate should be in the lower spectrum for sports cars. i hardly ever see a corvette being driven aggressively..usually corvettes are just chillin on the road
