Jerry Cans
Hey guys,
Did a quick search and didn't find anything. So here goes.
In the summer, I'm planning a road trip from Edmonton, AB to Vancouver, BC. About 1200km (~745 Miles). I have to travel through the rockies; so with the high altitude and probably pushing the car once in a while, I am willing to bet that I will run out of gas in the middle of nowhere due to getting 10 mpg.
Anyways, I was wondering if it is safe to store a jerry can in the trunk? If so, what precautions I should take (ie tying it down)? Don't put it in the depression in the trunk... etc....
Thanks

That's not good......
10 mpg would make that trip pretty tight.....
I've done it - filled at Edson, Jasper, Blue River and Kamloops. Perhaps your mileage will improve with the altitude and steady highway miles.
At high altitude you should get BETTER gas mileage, (mine went up to 24 miles to the Canadian gallon) as the MAF sees less air coming in, it sends less gas in. Your peak power will not be available, but I managed a steady 135kph fully loaded.
I would fill at West Ed, then see if you can make it to Edson - if you can't, you ain't gonna make the stretch between Blue River & Kamloops.
The red plastic gas cans are fine, but I'd imagine you have a better use for your trunk!

hmm thanks painter1. Now I wonder what the odds would be for that to happen.
I guess I'll have to plan my stops. Thanks Stealth. Were there any times you were worried about running out of time? I think I might head through Kelowna and maybe take a few detours.
I think with the steep inclines and declines, and pushing the car hard to pass trucks and slower cars, the mpg would just suck..
Thanks and Cheers!
