Just changed the oil on my friends G35

Figured you guys would get a kick out of this.

My buddy has a 04 G35, he is the 3rd owner. He says he has been changing his oil regularly, with Mobil 1 5w-30. Today we decided to change his oil instead of having him go to a jiffy lube. Grabbed him some 10w-30 since he plans on garaging the car for the winter so he doesn't really need a lightweight oil.

Anyway, we were using my pump to pump out the oil...... only 1.5Qt came out ....

We figured something was wrong with the pump, so we kept trying .... nope

Put the dipstick back in .... bone dry.

Uhh......impossible. Took out the filter, some oil dripped out, but it was just filter fill. Filled the car back up with 5Qt of M1.

I couldn't believe that the car didn't choke up or complain about low oil. He is going to monitor it, but it really makes no sense. Unless there is a serious issue and the last few times he went for an OC they never told him.

I know the 6sp g's with the rev up motor had oil burning issues. If it's an auto it shouldn't burn oil like the 6sp ones can.

I'm assuming this is the same motor in the 350Z HR, correct?

Yup. I joined a G35 board while I was researching them before I bought the 8. The problem was pretty well known and engines were replaced because of it.

wow i didn't think it was that bad, that explains why both my friends who owns Z keep asking about overheating prevention and rambling on about getting Motul and nothing else for their car.

This also proves he doesn't check his oil between changes. And why pump it out? Why not use the drain plug?

I have found better luck using one of the pela pumps vs drain pans. Espcially on our cars where a good amount of oil sits in our coolers and lines. I can pump out ~5qt of oil from an rx vs about 3 via drain pan.

Odd. Ours burns oil intentionally, about a quart every 1,000 miles.

Theirs burns 3.5 quarts every 3,000, so almost the same....unintentionally.

Where is the automotive media outcry on this? It should be getting bashed at least as much as ours.

Maybe it's because we admit it.

I had a 2002 Nissan sentra spec-v that had that problem too, altho mine never did burn any. They say the problem was that the cat in the header would get so hot that it would brake up into little pieces and get sucked back into the motor which would scar up the cylinder walls and lead to oil burning. There was a recall for the spec-v's and early altima's with the 2.5l in which they would change the header to one that I guess had a different cat in it. I put the nismo header on mine at like 3k miles so I was running catless pretty much from the start so that's why mine never burnt any oil, or I guess that's why anyway.

The G35 with the manual tranny had a slightly different version of the 3.5l than what the auto's had. It was actually the same one they put in the 350z. That's why the manual G35 had 19 more horse power that the auto. They called it the "rev up" motor.

I think the oil burning issue is as common in other cars as well, I have friends that own Evo, Sti, Type R and they all consume small amount of oil when fooling around but they don't get bash at all its weird.

I was just curious. I have an Acura Cl-S that I can remove the filter without raising the front end. If pumping out the oil works that well I'll be able to change the filter and oil in a matter of minutes without the mess of removing the plug and draining. Thanks.
Sorry for the semi-hijack.

Yep, pumps are great. Changed oil on my buddies 128i and didn't even need to get under the car (filter on the n52's is right next to the engine )
