Kabura on Cover of April R&T
#28
They should just surprise everyone and not name it MX or RX at all. Just call it...(wait)...
"Kabura"
So the lineup would be
Kabura: 170 hp Miata engine
Kabura-R: turbo'd Miata 4 or that new 244 hp DI 4-cyl. from that SUV (realistically)
OR a 250 hp N/A renesis (optimistically), OR a turbo'd renesis at 350 hp(daydreaming)
And if this car can actually stay around 2500 lbs. like the concept supposedly is...I can't really figure out a reason for the RX-8's continued existence. What would a 3,000 lb. RX-8 do that a lighter Kabura couldn't?

the article does have a heavy slant towards the idea of a new rx-7. keep in mind that that came from sam mitani, who seems to have quite a bit of industry connections. for example, mnao's homemade mazdaspeed rx-8 (that white one) was gonna be shown at sevenstock, but r&t somehow secured the favor to premier it in their speed magazine, and that article was written by sam mitani. so his tooting a new rx-7 out of the kabura might not be all that unbelievable. and if that's the case, i'm fine w/ that. heck, if that's the case i'd get that over the 8 'cuz it'd be cheaper. i used to own a fantastic FD and loved it and still love those cars, but you have to admit that it's very one-dimensional. going back to the original formula is the best of both worlds. plus, it'd fill a vacant niche; a two-seat hardtop that's cheaper and lighter than the 8? there's nothing like it out there right now

stop flooding ur engines
i got the same mag this week, the designer (omitting name due to failure to spell it right) said that this wont be the next rx7 bc the next rx7 will have to be much more "pure sports car" than this (kabura). he prolly means 2 seater 2 door. not this crazy 3 dorr 3+1 thingy.
my guess....
Piston equipped=mx3
Rotary equipped=rx3
that is all

I'd vote rotary for a few reasons. 1: you are already making them for the RX-8 so you can amortize the costs across two models rather than just one making both cheaper to produce. 2: if you put the MX-5 motor in then it's basically an overweight hardtop miata and would have disappointing performance below both the more powerful RX-8 and lighter miata. 3: because you can!!

Any future car taking on the mantle of the RX-7 (regardless if it's called a RX-7 or 9 or whatever) these days will have to live up to the FD. Even our RX-8 lives with the specter of the FD.

The RX cars are rotary powered and with an inline 4 platform, this isn't going to be a RX, probably a MX that was stated before due to its compact size. I like the idea of MX4 but no there is no way in hell this is a RX unless they suddenly decide to drop in a rotary engine.

leave the rx-7 name along, what most people dont get is that no matter how good any car is if they use the name rx-7 its going to be a disapoinment for many, the name rx-7 its now a legend, the only way is if mazda made a $45,000 super car ( remenber the fd had similar performance to a corvette and porche)and mazda is not going to make it.
if mazda built a piston and rotary powerd cheap and fun car it wil sell no matter what its call, but this car was going to be a revival of the rx-3 coupe and that its oficial, why it chage to an mx-3 dont know.

On my buy list for 07 or 08.

lol J, I just went to the store to pick it up and was about to scan it too. There's RX-7 written all over this article...
Notice the silver RX-7 concept, it's a little simpler but still looks good

After reading the article - still see the Kabura as more an entry-level sports coupe not the flagship a RX-7 would be - although you never know.
Any RX-7 - in this day and age - would have to outgun the 350Z - thus either a turbo or 20b. Anything else would disappoint. This would be a major jump for this concept.

I'd buy it rotary or piston engine. Nice to see that Mazda is making such nice lightweight RWD coupes.
Can they put the turbo 4 cylinder from the Mazdaspeed3 concept and Mazdaspeed6 in it?

They could make both an entry level sports coupe, and as it says in the magazine, and a 'stripped' down rx7 that could compete in the straights. At the end of the article, they vaguely say that their 'sources' say to expect a rx7 in 2008.
