Also USA
Unsold cars at Avonmouth Docks near Bristol
With many manufacturers on extended Christmas shutdown, the number of cars rolling off production lines in December fell 47.5% to just 53,823
Thousands of new cars are stored on the runway at the disused Upper Heyford airbase near Bicester, Oxfordshire, on December 18, 2008.
Sales of new cars in the UK have slumped to a 12-year-low and production of cars at Honda in Swindon has been halted for a unprecedented four-month period because of the collapse in global sales and represents the longest continuous halt in production at any UK car plant. The announcement comes on a day when the EU's Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen warned the outlook for the European car industry was 'brutal' and predicted not all European manufacturers would survive the crisis.

And your Ben Bernacke reckons your economy will turn around by the end of the year!...Yeah right....
Honestly these Guys around the world just don't get it, with all the taxpayer money being thrown around the world and borrowings ALL they are doing is making it worse...
What has got the world into this mess...DEBT!, and they are adding MORE Debt...Unbelievable.
This Crash has only just started to warm up...
Like the EU's Industry Commissioner said it will be Brutal on the car industry and some makes won't survive...
With Mazda's Jan 09 figures showing a cut of 72% in Exports!, I have REAL concerns about their own viability....I really do.
IMO you can forget about any new rotary or the 16X....if this continues it just won't happen.
All Mazda will be making will be the 2,3 and maybe the 6, I even think we may see the end of the MX-5 after this face-lift. I left out the RX-8 because that is already gone.
Yes it is depressing...

They'll scrap perfectly good cars before they price them to sell. They're worth more as scrap metal. Boy, we could have avoided this whole mess if we made cars to order, instead of making huge batches and praying to imaginary friends that they sell.

I don't really understand why there aren't better deals out there on '09s. Do these dealers actually think things will get better this year and people will start buying cars again? It's not happening. I think people have finally been scared enough into get their finances/credit/debt in order, meaning they no longer buy an escalade when they can only afford a civic. And face it, if an average american family would actually live within their means, any car over 30k is probably not affordable. The prices and the supply of cars need to drop sharply. The worldwide auto industry is way too big but governments will refuse to let them go under because of all the jobs involved.
And as a side note I test drove an '09 Jetta TDI and the just for giggles and was actually very impressed with the ride and of course the 40+ mpg from the diesel engine, but after contacting several dealers, none of them would budge more than a few hundred from MSRP. Same went for the GTI. Also looked at getting into an R3 and again, not much off from MSRP. Seems a little ridiculous since they are struggling just to get any showroom traffic these days. I guess on a brighter note there are several R3 8s available around here and it will be great at the end of the year when they will have to "give them away" because I can just about promise nobody will buy one. So they can give me a good deal now, or be forced into giving me an even better one at the end of the year.
