In the Market for a 1 series BMW-
May want to pick one up before 2015. BMW plans to make the car FF /shrug
Something is definitely afoot in BMW's development schemes. According to American auto magazine Car and Driver, BMW is developing three new models, including a new 2-Series.
The new models include a minicar based on the BMW Megacity concept, an Audi A1-competing FWD BMW slated below the 1-Series and a new 2-Series.
According to the report, a future 2-Series would become BMW's entry-level rear-wheel drive model while the 1-Series, along with the minicar and the small hatch models slated below it, would be FWDs.
The news that BMW plans to switch the 1-Series to a front-wheel drive platform in 2015 may explain why BMW has been so cryptic about just how many models or body styles would be derived from its new front-wheel drive platform. The front-drive 1-Series may also benefit from the new FWD hybrid system BMW is developing with PSA Group.
BMW recently filed trademark applications in the United States for the nameplates 228, 230, and 235, which hint at 6-cylinder power plants for that new 2-Series, although, BMW's badging no longer always corresponds to what's under the hood. One should expect 4-cylinder petrol/gasoline and diesel engines in any possible future 2-Series

Front wheel drive BMW's, that doesn't sound right at all.
They will steal alot of Toyota , Honda ,Acura and Nissan drivers that love there FWD platforms. No matter it still sounds bizzare, a FWD BMW...

i was ok with bmw's mass marketing fill-every-niche campaign until i heard they're developing a front wheel drive system. if i had to rank the top 5 or 10 things that make a bmw a bmw, i'd rank 'always rear-wheel drive' pretty high up there. obviously other car makers have rwd too, but bmw always stuck to the notion that that's how a proper car should be set up...even their x's have a rwd bias, and they only offer all wheel drive for adverse weather conditions. it's just not right...

the look has grown on me. really just the headlights kill me, they're too big and bulgy (recycled from the 3??) for the 1-series. anyway, the 135m will look pretty mean. and i'd get it over an m3 (well, unless i got the m3 sedan, which i love), because i think the smaller the better for that car. isn't the 135m like the 90's size m3? the 3 now is getting too big!
i'd actually love to have used a 128 convertible...that'd be a fun car to just tool around town in!

I don't think people are looking at this the right way. It makes sense for the 1 series to be the entry level car, even if it's not in the same "style" or "feel" as the previous design. I think the 2 series it going to be targeted at replacing the 1 series while the new 1 series will be placed in a class slightly below that. There's not really room for a car class between the 2 and 3 series. I'm guessing the 1 and 2 series will be very similar with one being FWD economy type car and the other being RWD sports type.
Edit: definitely agree on the FWD BMW problem though... just doesn't sound right.

i know the 135 is a beast, but to own a used one, that might lapse in warranty coverage, that would be the family's 3rd car, i'd definitely get the 128 just to enjoy some austin sunshine on the weekends. the 220 or 240 hp (or whatever it is) of the 128 is plenty for me and my gf, we don't track so no need to pay the premium or worry about the turbo's and warranty of the 135. please excuse my rational thinking here.

i'm not sure if you're lol'ing at me...but if you think the 128 convert is a chick car, put on your flame suit before all the miata fanbois chime in. THAT is a chick car, yet many many guys swear by it and happily own and track it.

^NO! YOU SUCK
i actually saw a 135 on the way to work today...they're not that common around here so it was nice to hear him floor it. the more i see the 1-series, the more i hate the 3 coupe because it's so bloated!! i do love me some 3-series sedan though...

I actually started to like the 135's . I saw too many 128's and I just wasn't feeling the look and power ratio. There is a guy here at work that drives a 128 vert and he wishes he got the 135. Watch some youtube videos of the 135 doing some auto-x and it destroys a lot of "tuner" cars. The only thing is that the modder's market for bmw's is expensive as all hell if you want to get quality parts, also the fact that Hamann slowed its role in BMW tuning and went for Aston Martins now. You can find some nice stuff still from Hartge and AC. Meanwhile the Hartge 135 looks quite sexy minus the rims

I'd be very careful about buying a BMW 1 series, at least in the current configuration.
This car (along with some others in the current lineup using the N54 engine) has a serious safety issue: the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) may cut out without warning. This is a serious problem when, for example, you're trying to accelerate to get into the flow of traffic or when someone is tailgating you and suddenly your car slows down.
Apparently BMW tried to fix the pump design once or twice and failed. There is currently a recall on the car but I don't know what sort of fix BMW is now trying to make. Some people say they are detuning the engine as a workaround.
Google "BMW Recall" for details.
Also watch the ABC News Nightline program exposé (Google "BMW Nightline") for an unsettling interview with a BMW official.
Somewhere between 130,000 and 150,000 BMW cars are affected by the recall.
