Mazda 03A Rotary Engine
YES, Coming to a brand new Mazda Dealer near you, the all new next generation of the Mazda Rotary Experiment... also commonly known as the RX-00
The all new Mazda RX-??, or RE-00, or RG-00....or..
With a 03A Single Rotor 330cc Flat Bed Rotary Generator.
Are you Mazda loyalists excited?
Cant wait to part with your hard earned cash, trade in your RX-8 (BTW which Mazda Dealers just do not want and are not interested in doing ANY trade in Deals.)
Yes, or Nope....
Sorry all I have are this PIC of 'a' single RE Engina

Why would anyone trade a sports car for an econobox? They are designed for completely different groups of people.
Again, I hope this thing works well. Even if it's not for us, it could be an interesting opportunity for Mazda to try out some new designs, like those showcased with the 16X(flatter rotor, DI).
Edit: is that thing at the top a fuel injector? Also, am I seeing 3 ignition wires?

The thing is that I would imagine that RE department of Mazda is like the EV department of a lot of other car manufacturers: underfunded and don't have enough resources because it can't bring in as much profit. We know that the RE department only has like 20 people at most working on it... Mazda is putting a lot of effort into Skyactiv-X at the moment.
This is probably one of the few chances they can even get to shine their ideas. If it takes off, then there might be hope for a proper RE car.
I am not having my hopes up all the way, either, but it's good to dream sometimes. Gives me motivation.

They likely will design the exhaust to make it as quiet as possible with the set RPM it will run on.
I have 2 concerns for this thing, though...
1. How will they market this thing? Obviously, rotorheads like us will at best be indifferent about it, and most people hear rotary, think of the reliability record of the 8 and just run away...
2. It's reasonable to assume this thing will still burn oil. How does Mazda expect people to check and add oil regularly? Last time I heard on the radio that less than half of the people in Canada know how to check oil level...

Laser ignition, possibly?
How much power can the gen-set that this thing is attached to produce?
If you can cram a powerful generator onto it, you could take a decent electric motor and build something completely ridiculous with it.
BC.

Or a Straw Hat..
Or Humble Pie..
Before I die...
My god nothing would make me happier to own the latest RE (only) Sports Car like the dripping RX-Vision 2 Door...but as always, Mazda always picks the wrong time, something in the world goes wrong and breaks the back of any RE revival, if it is not the oil crisis of 74 or the GFC 2008, or the climate change BS, or the un-elected morons of the EU telling half of the world what they won't accept.
Too little too late again...

is this an evolution of the rotary range extender talked about by Audi in 2011?

The motor probably won't be too powerful. Like ICE, bigger electric motor is also less efficient when going at a steady speed.
That said, it doesn't take much power for EV to keep up with some fairly powerful cars from a stop for a little while. I have read that when EV1 was a thing, it could keep up with a Mustang GT until about 40 MPH.

It is on their official roadmap, so I think it will happen. Mazda is justifying it due to the low-weight and size, allowing a lot of flexibility in packaging. I'm not particularly excited about it (not really about any EV), but it does allow them to continue engineering the rotary design, and may allow development into the future.
It is no secret the SkyActiv-G/D/X is the prized pig of Mazda. Even Toyota has taken notice and implemented a lot of the innovation (from SA-G) into their new Dynamic Force powerplant. Rotary may never see high production volume again, but it has a small chance of coming back as a niche (high cost of entry) sports car, if Mazda succeeds in moving upmarket (to compete with Lexus/Audi/BMW) and sees the bump in unit sales across the brand that they have envisioned, all on the back of their piston efforts.
