Mazda CX-7 and Ford Edge do NOT share platform

I had heard something like this before but this is the first i have read on the actual differences.
Mazda’s Jay Amestoy confirmed that the CX-7 is built on “a platform unique to Mazda,” and added that it can’t be said that the CX-7 is built on any one existing platform.

The sad part is the majority will not know this information nor will they care. This is not the deal breaker. They might as well saved some money sharing the same platform. Is it me or is it time for: Invasion of the Crossovers. Like Invasion of the SUVs a few years ago.
With these names that Ford is coming out with, you'd think they are starting to sportier and targeting the same demographic as Mazda, but that is a different story.

I'd personally like more details. And while they're at it they might explain the absence of a manual transmission. Maybe because people like me state they'd need a manual, then keep buying regular cars because they handle better?
