This sentence gets my attention.

"Develop an all-new Hydrogen RE with dynamic performance equivalent to a 3.0-liter gasoline engine and a range of 400 km. "

With the power they get out of a hydrogen rotary now, how the heck are they going to boost power to levels of 3 liter gasoline engines? The 400 km range isn't that big of a strentch for me to see happening but the power increase over what we've seen them do with a hydrogen rotary so far is just incomparable.

hey RG, i know it sounds crazy, but how about a turbo hydrogen rotary engine to reach the power levels of 3L gasoline engine.

You need a turbo hydrogen rotary just to meet the power of a current Renesis. They'd better up the ante quite a bit. Of course we also don't know what kind of power they relate a 3L engine too. Is it a Ford 3L or a Japanese 3L by comparison? Big power difference there.

a hydrogen rotary with ~250hp would make headlines everywhere, considering BMW only managed to squeeze similar power out out of a V12! with a turbo, it'll still be very very compact, then maybe mazda can also slap on the electric assist turbo, regenerative that and that, + some batteries in the trunk. it'll be the ultimate green vehicle.

Doesn't the current hydrogen RX-8 only have something like a 60 mile range? Or did I miss something?

Yeah but they are using a pressurized tank. Just think fuel cell.

for a 13b Hydrogen RE. More rotors doesn't have the negative emmissions effect for hydrogen that it does for gasoline. They'll need it to be hybrid anyway, and it only makes sense that way. Hydrogen is simply too inefficient for their goals by itself. A 15b Hydro/Electric Renesis might pull it off.

OK, thanks. Why didn't they use a pressurized tank on the current hydrogen RX-8 if it increases the range so dramatically?

Fuel cells (as they apply to hydrogen) are for extracting electricity out of hydrogen. It's not a storage container to carry it to burn it. The hydrogen rotary in existence today burns hydrogen so it just has a classic tank. They need to do something to compress it (pressurizing is the simple solution) in order to get a good energy per unit volume number.

Fuel cells will probably come about in cars someday, but not in the very near future. They're much more likely to find a clever way to compress it at first.
