Mazda Not Affected by the Massive Quake in Japan

Mazda’s headquarters and assembly plants in Hiroshima are located about 1,000 km South-West of the affected area and, although the quake was felt there, no damage has been reported.

The Japanese automaker ensures that nobody was injured and, as no work-stoppage is necessary, the next shift will proceed as planned.

My thoughts go out to Japan and it's citizens, the horrific images the world is seeing from this Quake, truly horrible..

I can not image what those poor people would be feeling..

I also can not imagine the horror of being trapped in cars and houses as they were swept away by the sea..

TOKYO --

An aerial shot shows vehicles ready for shipping being carried by a tsunami tidal wave at Hitachinaka city in Ibaraki prefecture in Japan earlier today.

Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Subaru suspended production at plants in Japan today and were assessing damage after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast, triggering a tsunami and shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo.

The shutdown could affect exports to the United States of such cars as the Toyota Yaris sedan, Scion XB and Scion XD, as well as the Honda Fit subcompact, Accord sedan and CR-V crossover. The temblor also affected production of the Acura and Infiniti lineups.

Toyota, the world's largest carmaker, said it evacuated workers from several factories in the quake zone. Toyota has two parts plants in northern Japan and two affiliates, Kanto Auto Works Ltd. and Central Motors Co., that assemble small cars in the region.

The status of those plants was being evaluated, Toyota spokesman Dion Corbett said. "We are still trying to get information from them," he said.

At least one person died at Honda's r&d facility, and fires erupted at two Nissan plants.

Spotty phone coverage in the quake zone made it difficult for companies to get a clear picture of the extent of the damage. Authorities in northern Japan were beginning to sift through the region's wreckage and tally the death toll when darkness fell.

Widespread damage

The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time off the coast of Sendai north of the capital, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The tremor also triggered a tsunami that flooded coastal areas. TV footage showed cars being washed down flood zones like toys and large capsized cargo ships tossed sideways, jumbled together and pushed inland.

The main airport in Sendai was transformed into an island surrounded by flood plains.

Aftershocks, many strong, rocked the region for hours afterward.

Toyota is one of the few Japanese automakers with a large manufacturing presence in northern Japan, a region it wants to make a center for small car production. In January, its Central Motors affiliate opened an assembly plant just an hour's drive from Sendai. That plant, with a capacity of 120,000 vehicles, makes the Yaris small car for export to the United States.

Toyota's Kanto Auto Works affiliate has another assembly plant in the neighboring prefecture of Iwate. That plant also makes small cars, including the Yaris sedan, Scion xB and Scion xD. The Toyota parent company also has two parts plants in the region.

Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said it is not clear yet if U.S.-bound Scions are impacted by the situation.

"As for production from here out, we will make a decision after we get a handle on the situation," Corbett said, about when the northern plants would reopen.

Toyota plants near the company's headquarters in Toyota City, in central Japan, had resumed normal production after brief shutdowns, Corbett said. There were no reports of injuries from those factories. Possible damage was still being assessed.

Death at Honda; fires at Nissan

Toyota also was confirming damage at its suppliers. Toyota Boshoku Corp. and Denso Corp., two of Toyota's biggest parts makers, both were said to have suffered some plant damage.

Honda shut down two assembly plants immediately after the temblor, spokesman Keitaro Yamamoto said. Honda's Suzuka plant in central Japan soon resumed production.

But the company's Sayama plant, north of Tokyo and closer to the epicenter, remained closed late Friday evening. Yamamoto said Honda headquarters was having difficulty contacting its plants. The Sayama plant makes several U.S.-bound models.

It sends the Fit small car, Accord sedan and the CR-V crossover to the United States, as well as the Acura RL and Acura TSX, Yamamoto said.

The company was unsure when production would resume. But Honda would close its r&d center and the Sayama and Suzuka factories at least through Monday, Yamamoto said.

At Honda's r&d center in Tochigi prefecture, one person died and 30 were injured when the quake toppled a wall at the center's cafeteria. No other injuries were reported.

Nissan Motor Co. also suspended operations at factories throughout eastern Japan. Small fires broke out at two assembly plants, including the factory producing the Infiniti M sedan and GT-R sports car. They were quickly extinguished, the company said.

The company also evacuated employees from its technology center south of Tokyo after the power was cut off there.

Nissan said plants would stay closed over the weekend. It will decide whether to resume production on Monday after assessing the quake damage.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, closed five factories, said Kenta Matsumoto, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based company.

Japan quake closes ports, threatens to disrupt auto shipments.

Cars and airplanes swept by a tsunami are pictured among debris at Sendai Airport northeastern Japan. A massive 8.9-magnitude quake hit northeast Japan on Friday causing 10-meter (33-foot) tsunami along parts of the country's coastline that authorities believe killed hundreds of people.

The massive earthquake early today in Japan threatens to crimp U.S.-bound exports of Japanese vehicles and parts in coming months, straining an already stretched supply base in the recovering industry.

All major ports in Japan were shut down today after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami. If ports remain shut for an extended period, exports of Japanese automobiles to North America could be delayed, analysts said.

"It's a very bad situation," said Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group.

"Japan has excellent ports but they're going to be the focus of rescue efforts. I don't know how much (non-relief shipping) is going to be going out for while," he said.

North American-based auto plants could also be affected if parts shipments are delayed, Virag said.

Toyota Motor Corp. said it has stopped production at two assembly plants and a parts factory in northern Japan.

The smallest Toyota model sold in the North American market, the Yaris, is built at one of the shuttered plants, near Sendai.

U.S. demand for smaller and fuel-efficient cars like the Yaris is expected to rise with gasoline prices just as vehicle sales hit their seasonal stride in late spring and summer.

Earlier this month, Toyota said slim inventory of its Lexus luxury brand were hurting sales in North America. All of the Lexus models sold in North America are made in Japan with the exception of the RX sport utility vehicle.

Baird analyst David Leiker said infrastructure damage from the quake could affect the shipments of parts and vehicles.

"The situation requires watching," Leiker said in a note for clients. "The Japanese supply base ships components around the world and (this) could have a ripple effect anywhere."

The Toyota plant in Japan that makes the Prius, which dominates sales of hybrid cars, remained operational today, said a U.S.-based Toyota spokeswoman.

Toyota's Tohoku car parts factory production was shut, and production was suspended at a plant that Toyota runs jointly with Panasonic Corp. that produces batteries for hybrid vehicles.

U.S. gas prices spiking

In 2008, the last time that U.S. average gasoline prices were as high as they are now, Toyota took advantage of the truck-heavy lineups of U.S. automakers and increased sales of its much more fuel-efficient models.

Average U.S. gasoline prices are up about 40 cents in the past two weeks to near $3.55 per gallon.

Honda Motor Co.'s subcompact Fit is imported from Japan for the North American market.

A Honda spokesman said that 91 percent of the Honda cars and trucks sold in North America are made locally, including best-selling models like the Accord and Civic sedans.

Honda's Sayama auto assembly plant was shut today and its Suzuka assembly plant halted production for a short time but restarted later today, the company told Reuters in Japan. Both plants are near Tokyo.

Honda's Suzuka factor makes the Accord and a version of the Odyssey. Those models are not shipped to North America.

A man was killed and 30 workers were injured at Honda r&d facilities in Tochigi.

A Honda parts plant there also was shut. That plant makes crankshafts and other transmission parts.

Nissan Motor Co. halted production at all four of its auto assembly plants in Japan, including plants in the severely hit Tochigi and Fukushima prefectures.

All five of the auto assembly and parts plants for Subaru brand vehicles halted operations, according to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., its parent company.

Auto manufacturing represented about 17 percent of Japan's industrial output in 2008, according to Baird.

The severe downturn in U.S. auto sales in 2008 and 2009 drove many parts suppliers out of business and forced others to retrench sharply.

The restructuring has improved profitability for remaining suppliers but has also stretched them so thin that even relatively minor disruptions can force wide shutdowns of auto assembly plants, executives have said.

While Mazda may be not damaged in any way...getting supply out (cars) could be a huge issue...
