Looking at the pictures and specs, a few things really jump out at me.
0.8L is bigger than the prototype shown a few years back, and sounds like this is a derivative of the 16x dimensions wise. Could this in fact lay the ground work for other multi rotor versions of this geometry? Perhaps Mazda wanted to pick a common rotor size it could use in other configurations, and decided to increase the displacement of this engine?
The picture of the rotor does not have a scraper ring like the renesis despite it still being side exhaust ported. Considering there's a single exhaust port, maybe only one side of the rotor has a scraper ring?

The variable port timing idea seems crazy ! An electric motor slows down the E shaft to prolong port open time !!!!

Speeds it up, actually.
Looking at the 16x specs, photos, etc. side by side with the patent filings, prototype photos, and specs of the 8x, I think it's the same. Hell, it's even there in the name. When you consider that Mazda is the only manufacturer doing anything rotary at all, AND it's just one specialty engine, AND Mazda isn't a large OEM with a huge R&D budget, it's a pretty surefire bet this is a continuation of the single thin evolutionary chain. I just hope we see the dual (or more) rotor version again soon. ICE doesn't have much longer on the clock.

I wouldn't doubt it - you wouldn't create a new design if there were not multiple uses planned as Mazda of the 20s isn't the flush cash Mazda of the 90s. Glad they moved forward with a rotary option.

never give up
This fuels the speculation of a new Mazda sports car other than the Mx5, like the concept shown on the recent mazda video. Unfortunately, an electric one with a rotary like that acting as range extender and some more juice? Less batteries, lighter.
Or we'll be having this same conversation in 8-9 years as Mazda keeps gaslighting.

77 cylinders, 4 rotors...
This is all good news. Do not despise the day of small beginnings...
