I am sure Mazda with its new partner Toyota will come up with some hybrid to compete in this new expanding segment. I just hope there are still real drivers' cars in the future from Mazda.
reports yesterday from one of the Japanese car mags that Mazda will have a prototype , not concept, for a next gen sports car at Tokyo in Oct. they had an awful in house rendering which is why im not linking to the translation. probably just hopeful speculation but ....
Maybe there will be a real car, of some sort, by the Tokyo show in Oct. That makes sense of their January e-newsletter renewed talk of the RXVision. Maybe many on this thread that had written off Mazda's ability to do this, will do a happy double-take.
Interesting, we will all have to wait and see. I always had faith in Mazda, if they were committed to accomplish it.
With sales down 6% in the US in 2016 from a record 2015, maybe a halo-car image-builder will help get more interest in the brand, and draw a few more butts into the dealerships, if only to buy more 3s,6s ,MX5s and CXs. Couldn't hurt !

"A total of ten months were spent bringing the RX-Vision to life, and fans will have to be a bit more patient before a rotary sports car goes on sale. “It’s hard to say exactly when it will happen, but it’s not too far in the future,” Maeda-san says, and smiles mysteriously before rising and striding purposefully back into the storm."
ASH8, your post is confusing. The link takes us to a story where Mazda USA January 2017 sales are the best since 2012. Some good numbers there, and hopefully a trend !
My statement was that Mazda USA sales, after a record in 2015, dropped 6% in 2016. That has been posted here before, perhaps incorrectly. Is your point that Mazda USA sales in 2015 were not a record. I will look it up to check the facts. Thanks

Yes, maybe the article is older, but the talk about a actual prototype at the upcoming Tokyo Auto show this Oct. is new and current. Don't try dismissing this now. Mazda would not talk about a prototype at this year's Tokyo Auto show and then NOT do it. Just be a big enough boy to admit this might just happen.
the first real month with the new CX-9 and sales are up subsatanially. nice to se teh 6 numbers up too.
but UGGH why are they reporting the Mazda 5 still? That inventory is over a year old , it shouldnt be counted any more. it just screws up the percentage gain
Worldwide Mazda has had record sales for first 9 months of fiscal year 16-17, up 17,000 over the last year, Selling 1,162,000 units.
North America has not has any records (total).................yet.
MNAO last record breaking year was in the late 1990's, since has been treading water, going backwards even, up and down and certainly not great.
Europe has been a great success as has Australia, just facts.
Seriously I dont know what Mazda in US can do (apart from making a V6) or something with some guts in other models.
Very strong suggestions from MA boss that the 2.5T will make it into CX-5 and Mazda6 but wont be called MPS or Mazdaspeed?...but at what price.
Remember you guys have got the Diesels finally coming, but I don't believe this will change much.
i wish they decided to spend the money on a kodo skyactiv mazda 5. it's a such a great sized/packaged vehicle that with a little modernizing would still sell in good numbers. The dealership guys i talked to a little bit ago said they have a hard time getting used ones and when they do they turn them over quick.
why they are still selling it as a 2017 in Canada in have no idea
Just be a big enough boy to admit this might just happen.
Keep spreading the fake news, "journalist".
I did have a dream last night that Mazda announced a production rotary sports car.
It looked more like the AM Vulcan. I was very excited. Then I woke up.
i wish they decided to spend the money on a kodo skyactiv mazda 5.
that money probably went to the CX-3.
I didn't see many Mazda 5's around here but those who did buy them seemed pretty darn happy with them. I know Bern put a gazillion miles on his and really liked it.
I like the hybridization of certain performance cars that can be applied to the rotary, see
Porsche 918
Ferrari LaFerrari
McLaren P1
koenigsegg Regera
Honda Accord Hybrid - interesting system comparable to the Regera's in operation
I had a few pages of catching up to do; I have a similar question.
Say we have an auto-stop-start system.
EPA/Euro testers: What is your idle emissions?
MAZUSA: 0 emissions, the engine is off. The driver is wearing a powerful cologne, however.
Big help in city MPG. We already know we need a strong starter anyway. Why not?
Let me don my crazy hat now.
With a performance hybrid system a la one of the above:
What's stopping Mazda from making an "electric car" that's only capable of a few miles of driving (similar to the hybrid hypercars above in all-electric mode), and then happen to also sell a parts/factory install package for an off-road "range extender" that uses wobbly triangles to make happy things happen? They confer any emissions liability to the owner. Owner gets the car smog checked (in electric mode): "Nope, it's an electric car, 0 emissions"
To do this idea as well as it can be done, the onboard electric power would be juuuuuust enough to get the car up to highway speed for certification. Be a great system for low-end torque/turbo lag. Mazdoyota have access to KERS technology... Why not?
Not that this would ever happen. What's stopping it though?
Until I see it posted by Ash8 I consider it hearsay at best. Just sayin'
Ok, and if it is ever posted by ASH8, how many nay-sayers will rush to this thread to say they were mistaken ?
None,probably.
It is so much easier, and so much more fashionable to knock Mazda. (hmm, don't we all own and drive Mazdas that we love ?)
It is not going to be decided on this forum by any of us, including me. If Mazda has the will to make it happen, they will, in spite of anything we shout or scream at each other here on this forum.
I am sticking with Mazda on this, period.

This is where you are DEAD WRONG 9k . In my 44+ years of ownership of both rotary and piston Mazdas as well as other American,German and Japanese cars, I have always found Mazda has delivered. Sure there were some misses, but more hits than misses along the way. The one thing that Mazda has always had (minus the constraints of the Ford years) was great engineering and the willingness to go their own way and try new ways to reinvent their automobiles.
If and when Mazda makes another rotary performance car, I know it will be something special and more than we have anticipated, and I will be ready to add it to my stable, whatever the cost.
Here is a quote today in an article from Car and Driver. Car and Driver has a pretty good history with Mazda and has witnessed all its successes and some failures. Car and Driver is convinced that Mazda is on the right track, and so am I. If Mazda has the will and the room for another rotary performance car in its lineup, I am sure that I, and Car and Driver, will be ready to enjoy it. What about you ???
Car and Driver_ 2016 Mazda CX-9 - Long-Term Road Test Intro Quote :"If we could marry a car company at this very moment, there’s little question it would be Mazda. Maybe it’s not the sexiest, certainly it’s not the richest, but there’s no other auto manufacturer with whose full lineup we’d rather settle down."

If and when Mazda makes another rotary performance car,
Wait, what? So it's " If " now?
What happened to this:

And what about this:

I guess you are confirming that you don't really believe, that you don't stand by your convictions.
Now I know why you wouldn't take my bet.

I thought journalists were supposed to be good at research and fact-checking?
I've said more than once that I want the RX-9 to happen and will happily admit I'm wrong if it does. I'm just not delusional about it.
(minus the constraints of the Ford years)
Once again, your journalistic skills come up short. If you were paying attention you'd know Ford's money and leadership are the main reasons Mazda survived the late-90's Asian financial cluster-f*ck. And a Ford executive, Mark Fields, is significantly responsible for the existence of the RX-8 and the fact that it's so good, as well as Mazda's focus on it's "driver's cars" niche. So Ford didn't "constrain" Mazda, they saved Mazda and guided them down the road to greater success!

That is a great quote. Worth repeating.
