And like Sonic said, the US is only a part of the market. I have read one reason they pulled the plug on the RX-8 is that it failed to meet the emission standards in Europe and they have basically lost the European market. Emission standards in Europe will only get stricter, that's for sure.
I remain a tiny bit hopeful, but I am not willing to even bet Monopoly money that there will be another rotary sports car. Last I heard, they have like under 20 people working on the development of the next rotary engine while most of their effort has gone to the SkyActiv-X. So do you really think anything bigger than the shoebox is coming out anytime soon?

they had to slip this one in the announcement:
"Taking advantage of the rotary engine's compatibility with gaseous fuels, the rotary-powered range extender is designed to also burn liquefied petroleum gas and provide a source of electricity in emergencies."

I thought maybe Mazda slipped and had a 2019 1/2 RX-9 Vision on their models page to order. *CLICK* here to place a deposit. (Ha Ha)

...on a lighter note...they did nail the Mazda 3 design. See more at: https://www.mazdausa.com/new-era?int...UyMjEyNzgyNwS2

Juke (puke). Every picture I've seen of this pre-production model is gorgeous. If they offer it with a manual in the 2.5T engine option, I'll drop my lust for a few other cars and get in line. Mazdaspeed - are you listening?

I'm sure they're listening about the same amount to those screaming for MazdaSpeed cars as they are to those screaming for the rotary back.

I think the MazdaSpeed brand is dead. No MazdaSpeed models anymore with no plans to develop them. "MazdaSpeed Motorsports Development" has been rebranded "Mazda Motorsports Development".
Mazda are spending most of their resources trying to move upmarket to a premium segment. It's similar to what Subaru did a decade ago. They probably see it as the only way for them to survive in the medium/long term. I think this is why the MazdaSpeed brand has been eliminated.

I think Ash has put the final nail in the rotary coffin.

Please let this be the end of it, unless Mazda announces 100% confirmation of a new rotary RX sports car or engine.

citation:
Mazda showed the Vision Coupe concept at the 2017 Tokyo show, then sneaked a mention of a rear- and all-wheel drive "Large Architecture" and two inline-six engines into a 2019 investor's report. Best Car says that concept's production version will house a 3.0-liter Skyactiv-X SPCCI inline-six with "M-Hybrid" 48-volt assistance. Output figures remain a mystery, but the mag says engineers are aiming for 345 horsepower. The real deal isn't slated for dealers until 2022, bringing what Mazda bills as a "BMW, Audi quality car at the price of Volkswagen." A further treat: Best Car says the Hiroshima automaker is laying out a two-door version on the same platform.
the production car derived from Vision Coupe concept seems quite near..
Best Car magazine talk about 345HP, i think that only a TC inline 6 can have that kind of power.
let's see what will happen. less than two months ahead.
