With a reservation. The average size of vehicles in Europe has increased greatly in the time since I lived in Switzerland back in 1990 or so. Automakers always hope to be on the leading edge of trends, not on the trailing.

You're unfortunately right.
Everybody praises the smart's dimension or the toyota IQ while the old fiat 500 was of about the same dimensions, seated 4 "medium" adults and people used to travel in it...
It's an awful situation. A test done by an auto magazine around 4 years ago demonstrated how a modern c-class mercedes engine in the old 190 would average 20 or so km\l vs the actual 13\14 they get now because of the increased size and weight.

People here are buying that particular model because it's better than what Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Fiat and Alfa have to offer
You are correct. The 3 is just a great car. 3 sales in Canada are amazing as well as Australia and Israel and many other countries. It is one of the best sellers of all cars sold in some of these places even crushing the Corolla and Civic. The points that make the 3 stand out as a value are what Mazda will use in a different scale to create the sales numbers with the next 6 in my opinion.
