Mazdaspeed MX5 coming Mid-2008
The folks who bring us all the News from the Automotive world supplied Autoweek, their sister publication, details on what is to become of the Mazda lineup over the next three years. Most of it is predictable enough, including the new Mazda6, due to be unveiled in Frankfurt, the refresh of the Mazda3 and the possibility of bringing the Mazda2 Stateside at the turn of the decade.
What caught our interest was the news of a Mazdaspeed MX-5, which will predictably be packing the turbocharged 2.3-liter liter four-pot that currently resides in the Mazdaspeed3, albeit slightly detuned to efficiently package the radiator and intercooler.
The Kabura concept, based off of the MX-5 underpinnings, may still be in the cards, as long as the automaker can include Europe and/or Japan in the production plans. Revisions would have to be made to the existing platform, but we suspect that it wouldn't take much to lengthen the wheelbase, slap on some new body panels and make the fixed-roof version of the Miata that we've longed for.
Also mentioned in the article was the forthcoming redesign of the RX-8, likely to bow sometime in 2009 or 2010, along with a new CX-5 which will likely draw cues from the Kuga concept set to be shown by Ford next month in Frankfurt. The only glaring omission: no mention of an RX-7 revival -- bummer.

make two versions of mazdaspeed mx-5, one with turbo 4 one with rotary!
keep the volume very low, a few hundred, use it to test the new updated renesis. That'd shock the whole automotive world.

but think of the mod potential on the mx5 with the 2.3 turbo in it? It will be detuned, but still likely be faster then the Speed 3, and outhandle it. This is what I've been waiting for. Mazda better get this right. This can end up being their fastest production car to date. Lets hope they don't severly detune it. That will suck, but nothing a few cheap mods can't fix
If they were to get this right, it could be bye bye S2000, but I'll have to just wait and see.

So does this mean that it will have the same 270hp engine as the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6?
I would also like to see Mazda offer this with a removable hard top like on the new S2000 CR. (no mechanical convertable top, which saves something like 90 lbs)

I'm thrilled and elated for the MX5 (had a '97 for 5 years and loved it), but what about the RX8?? The new RX8 in whenever will undoubtedly be better newer cooler, but seems unlikely they would entro a new model in MS trim level. So when is our turn? Or is the silent implication that the RX8 is already a "pure sports car", and therefore needs no MS package?

normally the norm is that the MS version comes one year before a redesing, so expect a MS rx-8 in 2008 (if it comes), in the miata's case it can be argue that the pontiac soltice GXP help speed thinks over

i'm still waiting....

Yes, the solstice is damn nice. It looks great, and with the turbo, it goes! And the MX-5 is no doubt more important to Mazda than RX-8.

no doubt. The GXP Solstice and Sky Redline bury the Miata right now in power. They need to up the anty, and by having a lighter car, and that 2.3 turbo engine, they can demolish the GXP and the Redline. The RX8 needs sales and demand. It never had either really, so financially it wouldn't be smart to make a Speed version.

Nope, not at all. All of the posts this week talking about future Mazda products were from Automotive News. The original article did not cite any official sources.
But, I imagine that Mazda will ensure the MS MX-5 is faster than the GXP. My best guess it will be detuned a bit in search of a flatter torque curve, but the weight advantage will make up for it. I am excited to see what they do in the handling department, as the car can definitely fit bigger rubber. I am quite content with the handling of my car right now with the sport package though.

you are right , and also if the MS does come it will be with a new version of the renesis, I dont think mazda is going to make a FI rotary any time soon

So what exactly r you looking for? I assume forced induction to add major power to it. When all is said and done, you're looking at mid to high 30k range for the car. It may sell 5000, but probably will pull a Mazdaspeed 6, where no one will pay the high price, and they will be forced to sell them for 8-9k off MSRP, just like what happened to the RX8 in 2004, causing a loss financially. I suppose they can add 10hp or so, put the body kits on it, nicer rims, ect ect, upgrade suspension, ect ect, but the then it's a ricerspeed RX8.
