Last week we reported on Mazda's plans to introduce a clean diesel engine to North America in 2010 as well as a new-generation rotary unit. Now Mazda is also talking about revamping what it refers to as its core models over the next two years, according to a recent Automotive News report.
As far as the U.S. is concerned, the redesigns will include the Mazda3 and Mazda6, the Japanese automaker's bread-and-butter sedans. In addition, according to Robert Graziano, Mazda's executive vice president of marketing, sales, China business, and r&d, another model will be introduced to slot alongside the Mazda3 and Mazda6. Unfortunately, no further details on what type of vehicle it would be were forthcoming, or the U.S. market plans.
No word either on a RX-8 redesign or successor, although the previously announced rotary engine redesign would signify that Mazda has something in the works. We'll take an RX-7, please.

I'll bet money on the RX/MX-3 theory. It makes the most sense at all levels. And, since the car is so light weight, it will mask what ever slight efficiency penalty the nex gen rotary engine may have vs a conventional DI piston engine.

The different fitments of the engines would probably call for very different engine bay design, engine, transmission mounting points, etc. They can place the 2-rotor a lot further back and lower than a 2.0L 4banger(smallest logical choice of piston motor). I'll be amazed if they can pull it off, this isnt like a I4 and V6 in a FWD configuration.

Mazda doesn't have anything to compete with all those little 'fuel friendly' cars; Honda fit, Nissan Versa, Toyota etc.
Mazda-2 it is.
