Can you drive 55?
CNN announced that our wise and caring democratically controlled Senate is proposing some new measures to help reduce gas prices!
Are they going to re-instate the regulations that used to keep commodity futures under control???.....Nah, too easy!
Are they going to permit more drilling and refining?....Nope!
They are proposing new Federally mandated speed limits -
just like the ones put into force during the simulated gas crises of the 70s when oil company monopolies forced prices up and prevented deliveries to franchise gas stations. Less speed should reduce gas use, traffics fatalities, and greenhouse gasses. And so prices should go down...
Rumors also suggest the Senate is bowing to car production interests who feel that slower speeds will make slow electrical vehicles and hybrids more equal to the demands of traffic.... A Prius will finally be able to keep up with a Corvette or an 8!
The double nickel is coming back - can you drive 55?

I believe it.
And nothing will be done about price gouging by big oil.
"It's Speculators", "it's the price of oil", "Look at the Wookie"
Don't ever look at the profit made by the oil companies selling gas we must have to drive to work.
This is no better than the coal mine corporations of years gone by; selling our souls to the "company store".
Congress won't do a thing. (Democrat or Republican it doesn't matter)
The TV media is paid off as well.
The White House; Oil Men.
Condi Rice even had an oil tanker named after her....

Measures like this crack me up. Congress assumes that if the United States only uses less oil that the price will go down.
I swear these people were smoking weed during econ class. First, yeah, people are not going to drive 55 MPH.
I'm origionally from Indiana and had to deal with that 55 mph nonsense before moving to Phoenix. Still, AZ had 75mph in many places until it was built up and lowered to 65mph. This, of course, in spite of the fact that these highways could handle 75 - 80mph safely as a limit.
Around 2002, Purdue Univeristy did a scientific phone survey of around 1,500 residents in different parts of the state and asked them if they speed and if so, how much?
At least 75% of those surveyed said they exceeded the speed limit, with more than 50% of those speeders doing so 5 - 10 mph above the limit. The rest fell into less than 5 mph or greater than 10.
Then the state finally got the message that hoosiers wanted higher speed limits but wouldn't raise the limits to 60 mph because it would cost the state $55,000 to post new signs.
Which also points out that the taxpayers would have to fund all the sign changes and those suckers are not cheap.

Actually is was a lone Republican Senator that proposed the idea.

I had another thought:
What a 55 Mph speed limit will help is the city and state funding used by the police force.
The ticket funding has gone way down since gas went up; how do the cities and states pay for all the gas used by these police cars daily?
Drop the speed limit and instantly write more tickets...

To reduce gas prices some could they try removing the taxes on gas used to clean ground water from gas pollution, and to make up that money add it to all speeding tickets, moving violations, parking violations, etc. This would reduce the price of gas and only punish those who have done something wrong?

Wasn't 55mph proven to not have any impact on traffic fatalities? I remember reading that somewhere.... Ticket revenue is most likely the reason to lower the speed limit. When I pull over on my bike for whatever reason, I always walk/ride away with a ticket. When I don't pull over all I get is an adrenaline rush : )

Lowering demand will have no effect on price, but raising supply by an infinitesimally small amount several years from now (when ANWAR oil finally makes it to market) will cause gas prices to plummet in the near term?
Even though I drive an 8, I still think gas should be AT LEAST $5/gallon. If it goes back down, they'll just start building Hummers and Land Yachts again.
And swiftnet: the higher your speed, the more dangerous the accident - IN GENERAL. Higher speeds are offset somewhat by improving safety satandards over time. But a car moving at 70 mph has 2x the kinetic energy of a car moving 50 mph.

Oil prices will not go down. The greed of oil magnates cannot be underestimated. Even if the whole US was swiss cheesed and oil was gushing do you think the rich oil bastards would lower prices and cut profits? Please..... At best if new drilling yields more oil it will slow the insane price jumps, but they will always climb...it is only about profit, all else is irrelevant.

There's more oil in the 4-corners region than humans have used since the beginning of the Industrial Age, and we've known about it since 1928 ... sure it didn't make much sense when oil was $15-$20 barrel, and it costs $22-$25 to extract shale oil, but now somebody please explain to me why we're just letting it sit and little mention is made of tapping it.
