I test drove an automatic 135i, because that's all they had for me to drive and I was still very impressed.
I drive a manual now and if I buy the 135i, I'll probably get it in manual trim, but I'm going to drive one before I commit.

'regular' automatics are certainly better than what they were a generation ago, and in many cases the objective performance gaps compared to manual counterparts have gotten very slim. but for many folks it's all about the subjective *feel* and *control* of a standard tranny. Most auto trannys i've driven will still upshift at the redline regardless of driver's intention, or will briefly delay a prompted downshift if it 'thinks' it shouldn't be downshifting.
Dual-Clutch semiautomatic gearboxes look to be a very nice compromise; I'm looking forward to trying out Mitsu's version. Hoping it will offer 'full manual' control of gear selection, at least moreso than, say, VAG's DSG.

I find the opposite to be true. Most "plain-jane" automatics with paddles will stay in gear at redline whereas all the dual-clutch ones will upshift. I believe this is the case for the SST and I know it is for the DSG.
