Mustang Monthly looking for a '65 fastback with a Wankel

It actually existed and they are looking for info on who built it and where it might be now.

http://blogs.mustangmonthly.com/6608...mmm/index.html

Well I have already contacted them with what I know As can be read in this book

http://www.okmustangs.com/ACTION/act71wankelbook.html

and these articles

http://www.okmustangs.com/ACTION/act8905musttime.html
http://www.okmustangs.com/ACTION/act9101mustill.html
http://www.okmustangs.com/ACTION/act66popsci.html

It was originally built by Curtis Wright as a showcase for their 2 rotor engine. that first book has some interesting dimensional and design info.

The other articles talk about how many hands it went through before it ended up with a guy named Ray Harris who had it until at least 1991

Some pics

and only making as much power at the crank as we make at the wheels stock.

I wonder if anyone noted the other interesting thing about that engine...

But considering when it was made, that's not too bad. How much were other N/A rotaries making back then? Obviously they were a lot smaller, but this one definitely had the power that (depending on weight) could make up for it.

Response to the second line: the fact that it makes more torque than HP? Also, where are the exhaust ports... they're not labeled in the picture.

That it was a p port motor. It was made by Curtis Wright so it was probably meant to airplane use.

Nice find. Now if they can find the car.
10:1 compression and center main bearing. Nice. And the fuel drain out the exhaust to keep from flooding.

i bet its torque is due to the fact that it has such large and heavy rotors. any other ideas?

Cool article. Now who's motivated to start a company and build purpose built, non-Mazda, plug & play replacement engines for Mustangs and Camaros and other cars? That would just so cool. Oh well. Wishful thinking. Probably too much R&D behind it.
