Yummy.

Especially if the next rotary is going to share the same platform.

Though, I caution the readers, that alot of "details" they are mentioning are still assumptions or guesses. Not much in there was actually claimed to be from Mazda. The target weight, the powerplant, and width....and that's about it.

Mazda had released an Anniversary Edition Mazdaspeed MX-5(Miata) in 2004, the NB engine is equipped with a turbo charger. I was quite interested, but I read reviews that it was still under powered and had a mid-range turbo lag. This new MX-5 will have the turbo with a much smaller engine, reminisced on a time when I had an EP91Toyota Starlet!

If it is turbo'ed, it won't be "perfect" i'd expect. Boost would be low (remember that they already have a really high compression engine), and it would probably be tuned for a wider powerband, something without a sudden surge of power, etc... (for the lower end of the enthusiast scale) And that will keep the peak rated power that gets published lower than people who care would like to see.

I highly doubt this will happen. Even as an option.

Mazda intends to lower the weight of the next Miata (compared to the NC) by at least 300 pounds, all while keeping the same price range, quality, and required (safety) features. Not to mention the purest vision for the Miata- Simple and light, which usually translate to NA engines.

How many times are you going to take the marketing stink bait hook, line, and sinker in advance of real world data?

LOL Somebody posts an article like that, and you can cue the fanboys... not like some strange phenomenon. Moths to a flame.

You are correct. The article is, once again, the usual round of nonsense. They have shown no intention to incorporate turbocharging with Skyactiv technologies at this time and a turbocharger would add weight. I think they are targeting a 220 pound diet rather than 300 though.

To the OP, it could still be good news for anything sharing architecture with the MX-5 (If there was any news here at all)

Paul, that Skyactiv video you posted on FB was interesting in this regard. They were talking about the gasoline Skyactiv engine, but if you look closely at the exhaust manifold and how it's designed...

...it does look suspiciously like something is attached there, in the general size, shape, and nearby plumbing of a turbo. Hard to see because of where it's tucked, but I've been unable to call it anything else.

Not saying that the Miata will be turbo'ed, just that the engine in the video looks like it is.

I tried to respond on Facebook and it was screwing up that evening.

The exhaust snakes around as it does to achieve the correct primary tube lengths necessary to accomplish the combustion heat reduction benefits necessary for the 14/1 compression ratio. The tubes collect directly into a catalytic converter.

Hmm..

I thought sure I had seen prior I4 exhaust layouts from the Syactive being stretched out. I agree that curling them around is viable.

Found another image of the same exhaust setup:

I can now see where that other tube is going too.

I found a video that shows greater detail to clarify. Of course, this is only the Mazda 3 version we are looking at.

I'm not sure what item we're talking about anymore . The manifold twists toward the rear of the engine and goes into a cat before meeting what is either a second cat or pre-silencer. I suspect it's another cat. There is a belt driven item on the front of the engine. There is EGR cooling on all the SKYACTIV engines as well.

Maybe someone can tell me where in the video or any of the pics they are seeing items that look like turbos but my ancient eyes don't see it.
