My insurance company is pwning me!
Ok, originally this thread was supposed to be about me posting about how I recently turned 25 and got a sizable reduction in my car insurance policy. I had finally got around to going to my insurance company's website to see how much insurance would be for a few of the cars I'm interested in.
So, originally, the cost of insuring a 2006 RX-8 for 6 months was $801.55. I accidentally closed that tab before writing that number down even though I was 99% sure I remembered what it was. I re-entered all the info again and got the same number. Then I then put in a 2006 350Z and got $954.00. Then I put in the 2006 Evo and got $1,150.76.
Now, here's the crazy part. I had originally put in 2006 because I was kicking around the idea of actually getting a 2006 Winning Blue RX-8 (they don't have that color for 2007). Just for completeness I decided to go back and get the value for 2007. When I did that the RX-8 numbers jumped up to $946.92. That seemed really weird so I went back and got the quote for the 2006 RX-8 again (which was saved) and the number had changed to $907.17 -- $100 more than it was earlier in the day. I entered in all the info from scratch and got the same number.
What the hell! So as paranoid as it sounds I'm starting to think that my stupid insurance company saw that I requested a quote for an Evo and decided that I was "high risk" or some crap like that. What do you guys think?

Talk to your agent. Websites can sometimes mess up a little but there should be NO reason WHAT SO EVER for an estimate to increase based on quotes for other cars. Then again they are estimates and not necessarily an accurate indication of the final amount...

Ha! It remembers the quotes it gives recently and my original quote is still there with the original price. I'm not crazy!
This was like 12 hours ago so it's not like I requested these months ago. What a bunch of douchebags. I hope that I'm just missing something here.

They are not going to jack rates around because your looking at different cars. They want your business. I would try and get some more quotes from other insurance companies.
I use Allstate and they seem to be OK by me. I pay around $130.00 a mo. $400.00 deductable.

Every single option on my original quote matches my new quote -- except for the quote. I'm going to call them next time they're open and see what the deal is. If they're not willing to offer me the original rate I'm going to be kinda pissed. That's just shady.

You always want to call your local agent and have them run a check on your credit also (IF you have good credit. It's a soft hit but it's worth it to how a lower payment.) And the agent will also check to see which car is better to go with as primary and pleasure cars along with more exact rates. Websites can say one thing but an agent can bend the rules a little to save money.

Some automated systems (like credit) supposedly have triggers to bump you down if too many inquries come in. To the company, it means someone is checking on you, or something is going on - so they red flag it with a higher rate till someone can take look to see what is going on.

I guess in the end it doesn't really matter. When time comes to buy a new car I'll call around and if USAA won't help me out, I'll move on to another company. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Haha, they raised the rates for the RX-8 again! Now it's up to $921.30. The rates for all the other cars have stayed the same. I can now insure a Cayman S for appreciably less than an RX-8.

Call them. Or I will pwn you!!
I use State Farm and they were about $130/mo for me when I lived outside Phila. The online stuff usually is more of a hassle then it's worth. Call at least 3 places. Also do your parents have an insurance agent they go through? They might be able to get a decent deal through the same guy and put you on the family discount. I get a sizable chunk off because I have my house, wife, wife's car, and...El Ocho...insured all through the same company.

Good to know that you use the word "poor" in such a derogatory fashion. You sure impressed me. Learn to read (and write), moron.

The same thing happened to me when I got my renewal in November. It went up something like $65 a month and I had no tickets or accidents or anything. I called them up to find up what was going on and after the agent called the company to find out, he called me back and said the insurance industry had re-classed the RX-8 as a high performance sports car, which raised the rates up. So, as a compromise in November they only raised my rates $15 a month, but now that my six month period is up it is going up the additional $50. It sucks. I just hope they don't keep raising them.
