India's Tata Motors to build $2,000 car

India's largest automobile manufacturer, Tata Motors Ltd., said yesterday it plans to set up a plant in West Bengal state to manufacture a family car that will cost little more than $2,000 (U.S.). The plant will be set up with an investment of 10-billion rupees ($247-million Canadian), and is expected to start production in two years, said Ratan Tata, the company's chairman. He said the company aims to keep the car's price below 100,000 rupees, making it the cheapest car on the Indian road. The Tata project is expected to create about 10,000 jobs at the plant and vendor chains. Tata didn't say how many cars the plant will produce each year. It also wasn't clear if the company planned to sell the car in overseas markets. TTMT (Mumbai) fell 89.3 rupees ($2.20) to 872.9 rupees. AP

For a 100K mile TATA car, at 30 MPG, the cost of ownership is about $12K with $10K going to gas. So much for cheap transportation.

lol, well to give an idea this is what the $5,000 dollar car looks like.

Remember we're talking about a country where the most expensive car is the Hyundai Sonata.

I doubt that manufacturer will attempt to sell a car in America.

Driving a car in india is not a very practical thing to do. There is simply too much congestion so most people choose motorcycles and cabs. Privately owned cars are there, but they are more of a status symbol than anything else. This car is probably going to be marketed to the middle class in India.
