It was R&T, I believe, that called the RX-8 stying "Avantiesqe." Hadn't thought of that but when I read it, I realized that was what attracted me to the RX-8. Perhaps it's an age thing, but for the ancient of us, the '62 Avanti represented the epitome of American car design. It was Studebaker's last gasp and such a radical departure from other American designs of the time (long hood, short deck), that it made it to the Museum of Modern Art.
Couldn't save Studebaker, but it remains an icon for many. So, before trashing the looks, consider that the design is 43 years old. What other American car of the period looks like anything other than a dinosaur. (Remember the Mustang was still three years away when the Avanti was introduced.)

The old school avanti was pretty bad ***. They had some pretty fast version back in the day. The new ones do look terrible however, I don't know how they sell any of them.
The company also had a pretty interesting history if you read through it. A lot of different owners, a few crazy ones, and really inconsistent production numbers each years.
