New car to keep 10+ years...
If you were going to buy a new car with the intentions of keeping it for 10+ years, what would you buy?
Obviously, it would have to be fun to drive (why I bought an RX-8 in the first place),
but now that I'm starting to get into out-of-warranty maintenance (105k miles, 6 years old) bills, other considerations have come into play. For example, how awesome is the enthusiast community (thank god for RXClub.com), how easy is it to find parts and how expensive are said parts?
I plan on keeping the RX-8 for another 3+ years, but am thinking about buying something new in 2011. Lots of things on the short list, but would love to hear folks' thoughts. Thx!

Either something with no electronics (impossible) or something where the basic running gear has been made in large numbers. One can always fabricate this or that part out of metal, but how does one replicate a computer module that's been out-of-production for many years? 10 yrs is a rather short scale for the moment, but the rate and magnitude of engineering changes to cars is increasing dramatically. Today's 10 yo car has a H3 halogen bulb common to virtually every car make in 1999. What about a BMW's HID headlight assembly, costing $1700 now, 10 yrs hence?

I really like the idea of a 911 or M3... don't think my wallet could stomach it, though. I about coughed up a lung when the dealership quoted my a price of $1400 for a new OEM cat. I knew they were pricey... just not thaaaat pricey. I hate to think of what OEM BMW/Porsche parts run for.

The nice thing about a porsche is you get the performance but also a ton of reliability/quality - engines are kinda bulletproof and the unibody resists falling apart for a long time.
Maybe look at an older 80s or 90s 911 for under 20k?

10 years is a long time. Imagine keeping a computer or cell phone for 10 years. Technology is going to change a lot...
Some manufacturers still have 10 year 100,000 mile warranties, but their fit and finish will probably start to go at year 5-7. (Korean: Genesis?)
I hate to say it, but German may be your best bet. GTI, WRX maybe?. . . That's a pretty tough one to answer, fun and reliable.

Just do your homework and get it checked out by a good shop.

i'd say used m5 or m3. my brother and a buddy of mine are still rocking their '02 M3s. some things are coming apart, but in general the little guy has held up well, and that motor is really something. i can only imagine what the new one is like...
