The front of the New 6 also appears to be "Huge"...thicker/higher from ground to top of hood to comply with pedestrian safety regulations...like all cars the bigger, squarer, blunt front end.

I agree, but, look at the new Mazda 2, with a more extensive use of high strength thinner and lighter steel Mazda have saved 100 pounds, and if you have ever physically seen the current Mazda 2 you would think where and how can they do this as they are very light already.
So, I think you will see the same extensive use of HS Steel in the NEW Mazda 6, so weight gain will probably be minimal....if any.

yes, that is probably the only way of lightening a car. By cleaver engineering or by use of lighter weight materials, which is more expensive! I am glad that mazda chose to go with the more expensive steel in a entry level car. You cant really find any car cheaper than a mazda2!!
I hope you are right ASH8, and i do have some confidence in mazda that the new 6 wont be gaining weight like other new cars.

Interestingly enough , this web article from Drive.com http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/Ar...rticleID=37031
says
So that still leaves New York in just over a week or so. will mazda not show something new there? or will they bring the 2 and all the concepts with them?
says
Mazda has only just unveiled its next-generation 2 light car, and the second-generation 6 will follow in just a few months with a public launch at September’s Frankfurt motor show.
