New Mazda Engine's To Start IN 2011
#26
Is this part really true? I've heard that idling was approximately 18% of the older EPA overly optimistic city fuel economy test. But if the US system deployed by Mazda requires the user to turn the system on every time he starts the car, it may not be allowed to be part of the EPA test. Porsche is currently negotiating with the EPA about this.

It really varies from owner to owner. I currently get 25-26mpg highway and ~21.5mpg in mixed city/highway driving. A 30% improvement for me could get me closer to 25mpg in mixed city/highway driving and closer to 32mpg highway.

That's basically what I get also. Going to kent island meet from PA, I've showed a couple people and they couldn't believe how much I got, especially since the car was packed..

This weekend on the way back from my parents I went 160.6 miles on 7.17 Gallons of Shell 93. I have a brand new engine, brand new BHR kit, Wires, Plugs. This is on basically new tires as well and I using 0W30 GC.
Oh, and ambient temps were around 105 degrees.

I don't understand why some people get such bad mileage when you see 4+ right now around low to mid 20's. I think mazda should come out with something that gets 40+mpg so they can give the rotary more power without having to worry about mpg on it. Also seen in car and driver mag, that they add a gas guzzler tax to new vehicle's when you buy them if they don't meet the requirements as for example, the new lambo gas tax when you buy it is about 6500k extra on the price.

i definitely got 24.5mpg on a highway going 65mph.
of course that was awful and i'll never go that slow on 95 again. even trucks were honking and swerving around me.
i usually travel 80-85mph.

My 09 RX-8 (manual transmission) still has less than 4,000 miles, so fuel efficiency may still go up, but when I drive it to work (170 mile round trip drive, almost entirely expressway), even if I set cruise control to 67 mph, I still get 22 mph. This is my second, recreational vehicle, and I knew exactly what I was getting before I bought the car, so I'm not concerned, just adding some data. I would still be thrilled with a 30% improvement. 27 to 29 mpg on the highway would be fantastic.

*ding, ding ding* we have a winner. On pure gasoline I"m getting 24-25 without to much of an issue. Unfortunately everything around here is up to 10% ethanol. Then I average in the low 20's 20-22 usually with pure highway driving.
It really does come down to the fuel and how you drive. If you are cruising at 75mph plus, you've got all the ports open (3750+). Of course you are going to be burning more fuel.

I'm going to bother everyone here. I got 47mpg in my turbo protege while averaring 90mph. 80-140mph on a drive from nor cal to socal. We tuned the car going up for power and on the way home we leaned it out some. The turbo was spooling the entire way.

That is some huge improvements on their 4 cylinder engines. I used to have a 2.3l mazda 3s, and it had pretty shitty gas mileage so it's good to see an improvement.
For the rotary I could care less about fuel economy. More reliable, lighter, powerful is all I care about.
The best I ever got was 21mpg at 73mph from Santa Barbara to San Jose in California on 101. Got 20, going the other way on the coastline highway 1 (sure a great drive) and I wasn't trying to save gas.. *shrug*. Now I get 11 to 14mpg and I am sure every prius driver must be like this guy is wasting so much gas.. but I am having too much fun and always get to work with a big smile in my face no matter how moody I might have been in the morning.

What exactly is the cutoff for the gas guzzler tax? I noticed when looking at Challengers that the SRT-8 has one and is listed as 14/22 for the 6-speed. I believe the R/T is listed at 16/24 but that doesn't have one. The rx-8 is listed at 16/22 and doesn't have one. I think the GTO also had one when I was origianlly looking at them but I don't remember the listed figures on the sticker. The 8 has gotta be damn close to having one.
It's pretty borderline.
I get around 28 on all highway trips, and I'm wholly unmodded. Some guys with the right mods get over 30 highway, so long as they keep their foot out of it (which is easy enough to do at highway speed).

16X exists therefore it will sooner or later come out in a RX car, maybe not the 8 in the series II but for sure in the one after. Who knows they might have 2 rotary cars in their line-up....but the 16x is real and is coming

Just imagine the sales if the 8 actually did have one.

I like the way this is stated. Sounds very ominous...haha

A rotary is never gonna get good MPG's but id totally take 23 over 15...
The Rotary is always gonna be hated, from his superior power with 3 rotors, to the redline being limited in the Grand Am series to its poor miles to a gallon, but you already know this

rotaries are always going to be fuel inefficient and the people that buy the rx-8 aren't looking for good MPG's, they want a fun fast well-engineered sports car, mazda should focus on making more powerful rotary engines and make the rx-8 a serious 350z 370z competitor
