New Mitsubishi Eclipse..

New Mitsubishi Eclipse..
What's up with this car? It looks like a lancer front stuck on the back of a G35 coupe..I wonder if Mitsu will even be around long enough to make it to production with this? I guess there's nothing wrong with it, just looks like the design is a hack job.

I don't like it - it's really goofy looking. Looks like a deformed jellybean. I think the new Eclipse may be sort of Mitsubishi's last dying grab for a bit of marketshare to keep their heads above water. If this thing doesn't sell VERY well, I think they're going to tank shortly after its introduction.

You know, after looking at all the pictures, they're definitely got some decent ideas, they just uglied it up somehow. I think they need to kill the clear tails and give it a more aggressive front end and it could possibly look very nice.

Another "more power, more gluttony" new car. I swear we'll all be driving 4000 lb cars in a few more years, and that will be considered "light". But don't worry, we'll all have 300-400 bhp too! Thats fast right?
Eclipse Spec's (Weight wise)
Curb Weight
Manual-(3472 lbs)
Manual w/SR (3499)
Auto (3538)
Auto w/SR (3565)
Weight distribution
Manual w/d-62/38
Auto w/d 63/37
I used to think the MPS 6 was heavy...but now I realize everything new is heavy...

I'm really not liking anything new mitsubishi puts out...they haven't made a good looking car since they dropped the 3000GT and restyled the bubbly eclipse. The interior of the new eclipse is awful, there's like four different colors all over the place

Anyway, not my cup of tea. I think the design lacks thrill, except for dashboard, which is too much red'n'black even for me.

I liked the concept car....
The concept car that was shown in 2004 was a bit more agressively styled and had a panorama roof, AWD, etc

Of course cars get simplified when they go from concept to production.
How well will a FWD car handle with 260HP? Wouldn't there be a lot of understeer?

I'm a little confused about the performance in the new Eclipse. According to the mags, it will be putting out around 240-260 HP and 0-60 in around 7.5-8.0 sec.? (I don't have my mag in front of me). I'd have guessed better performance, but that may all shake out once they get the production models tested.
I liked the concept much better than the pre-production photos that I've seen.

truemag -
I agree that the weight will tend to make this car a slug. I just remember my '97 GS-T and the incredible power it had. Supposedly 6.6 to 60 with all options on it. I had a blast with that car and had no problems (except for my neighbor who thought that the big stock spoiler was to compensate for other shortcomings - he had a Harley, so what does that say? But I digress....). Anyway, I hate to see Mistu going the way of the dinosaur. I had a NA Plymouth Laser in '90 that was a DSM product, and was fortunate enought to have the FI follow up on the Mitsu side. The 3000 GT was a beast, and even a lot of fun in base form. Mitsu is clearly in trouble, and the design team is (and should be) taking a beating in the press for some of the abominations they are putting out. I like the EVO, but mostly for what is between my feet and the front bumper. Oh well, my $.02.
