I've heard the GT-R is to rival the 997 TT (which is rumored to have 460-480bhp) in performance, while retaining it's aws, awd/rwd hybrid, 6 cyl. TT. Nissan is taking a while with this one, it should be good.

I think it looks better than the Z. Also read another article that stated the price was going to be around 70k. It will be a hot car, if one could afford it.

I'd have to say Infiniti to justify the supercar price...

Yeah...honestly while some of it looks nice I think the overall look fails to live up to the GT-R legend that I hear so much about. Nissan (and I like Nissan) if you are selling this thing for 70K, make sure it has 70K looks and not just 70K HP (if there is such a thing).

I'd feel funny telling people it was an Infiniti Skyline. That would be weird. And I have a $70K Mazda, so I don't see what the big deal is.

i think americans are too stuck on different level of brands. I mean in Japan, you have a huge lineup of one brand, not a problem, you have something from a Nissan Cube to a Nissan Skyline, or Honda City to Honda NSX, there wasn't any problem with that.. but then again, they have different dealership networks for various models.

Atually, that car is supposed to be called the"GT-R", not the skyline. The skyline is out in Japan already and, if I haven't got this completely upside down, looks exactly like a g35. I may have to leave soon, so i'll try to verify this today.

EDIT: Sorry, it'll be called the Skyline GT-R. The base model is essentially a G35

The car we get here in the US and Canada is a rebadged Skyline sedan -- not to be confused with a Skyline GT-R, which is a completely different animal. The coupe is marketed as a Skyline 350GT.

The short version:

G35 = Skyline /= GT-R

skyline GT-R is to skyline/G35 what EVO is to the Lancer, or what Z06 is to the corvette, or what cobra is to the Stang. top performance trim of the base model. nissannews.com and autoweek has reported that its pretty much set in stone that it will be an infiniti.

I agree. American's will generally buy crap as long as it has the correct brand name. Look at all those people that pay $500 for a stupid handbag or purse, or $200 for a pair of sunglasses. I guess car's are no different.

It's no different. Americans are all about status and keeping up with the Joneses. That's one reason people get into so much debt. It's so stupid. But however you rationalize your insecurities is your own business, and it sure keeps companies that cater to it in the greenbacks.

You really have no idea what you're talking about do you?

The Japanese are THE MOST brand conscious society. People would buy import BMW's and Benz' so they would be LHD instead of RHD just to look that more pretentious. To make it worse... BMW picked up on it and offers most models in both LHD and RHD versions.

Brands like Coach, Louis Vitton, Tiffany, etc. are like Honda... Honda make something like 90% of their sales in the US. These "premium" brands all make record sales and profits in Japan. Not to mention that their stuff is all maked up much much higher than what you'd pay in the US. Same goes for BMW, Benz and other car brands.

The dealership network in Japan it totally different than the US today. All the dealers in Japan are owned by the respective manufacturers. As you alluded to, they usually divide the models up along certain lines and sell them at different dealers (with slightly different names). The Nissan Skyline is hardly high end... the Fuga, Cima and President would be the high end luxury models.

Why do you think Toyota is starting the Lexus brand in Japan? Maybe people in the 70's and 80's didn't care, but with the advent and succes of Lexus, Acura and Infiniti... you see many people changing the badges on their cars in Japan. You also have seen significant growth in sales of major European luxury brands. People would rather drive a BMW or Benz than a Toyota Crown or Nissan Fuga. Image matters in Japan... probably more than it does in many other societies.

As far as that article goes... the writer is a moron. Plain and simple. Toyota started Lexus in the US because the luxury market was ripe for the picking and no one was going to pay that kind of money for a Toyota (Nissan or Honda). The Japanese brands were seen as reliable and well-built, but still "economy cars". The great success they've had, especially Lexus shows the complete ignorance of the writer. To take it even further... Toyota is making a Lexus high-end sportscar. Honda is planning a next gen NSX. Notice all of them are branded under the luxury nameplate. Nissan already has the Z and will be getting some sort of 240SX replacement. The fact that the Skyline is already being sold as not just an Infiniti instead of a Nissan, but the name was also changed to G35 8and has done well) goes to further show that the writer is just wrong.

There are brand conscious/trendy people everywhere. And then there are the Japanese... where just about everyone is brand conscious/trendy.
