The new VW GTI
#26
VW has way too many quality control and reliability problems, and their dealers and customer service aren't worth ****.
I know far too many people who' ve had enormous problems with Volkswagens - I'm speaking of major problems for which no respectable service or solutions were offered - to even begin considering owning a VW.

I was checking on the site about some of the bodykits... dual exhaust with dual tips (ala BMW M series)... looks freaking hot! Checked out performance mods too... turbo back exhaust and ECU flash netting some big gains. Tuners are already squeezing up to 300-375hp out of this motor. Damn... I might really have to test drive one.

Ahh hell. One can go by reviews and what they read, or take the chance, like many of us did with the high risk RX8. I read about all this reliability issue stuff, and it makes me wonder why and how I managed to get 220k trouble free miles out of my old GTI, and my dad's 2001 Golf has well over 100k on it, and has not had a single hint of a problem. Then you have my friends 1999 jetta which is at like 90k miles and no problems. Are these problems related to certain models, because I have yet to see them, and my roots are VW. I look at VW as being the most reliable cars I have ever owned through experience of friends, myself and family, only to see it getting ripped on. My RX8 actually was one of the most problematic of them all. I guess it's all a risk in the end, and you just never know. I think the new GTI is gonna be reliable. If it wasn't so underpowered, I wouldn't hesitate to let go of my STI, and try this baby out for daily driving.

On my 98 GTIVR6 the powertrain and drivetrain were very good and the car was fun to drive and sounded great with the neuspeed intake and exhaust I had installed. That being said the car was not without it's issues.
The shifter was attached to the trans by a cable system, which was prone to failure. The linkage where the cables connected to the trans would break on occasion. This happened to me in traffic on my way to work. The choice of materials for that paticular part to me was unacceptable. If they had to cut corners it should have been done somewhere else.
The rubber trim on the sides of the car would fall off in hot weather.
The fabric (faux black leather) pulled away from the window guard.
Vaccum operated door locks had a high rate of failure.
In below freezing weather the locking mecanism inside the door would freeze thus preventing the handle assembly from pulling on the latch release inside the door. On many a cold morning I found myself entering the car through the hatch back.
The window regulators were secure by plastic clips on either side which were also prone to breaking. This part amounted to a bicycle brake cable with plastic clips on eithe side and cost $240.
Despite its shortcomings I loved the car and everyday I remember less and less the problems I had with it and remember more how much fun it was. I have also been considering buying a used R32 to drive in the winter and around town once the 8 is paid off.
