More goodies:
Howerton here in Indy on Gasoline Alley makes the 3 rotor headers. The exhaust is a wicked expensive thing that I'm told is leased from Dr. Ianetti (the apex ceramic seal guy). 3 rotor Rolex GT Carbon Fiber parts (you can find them on the MazdaMotorsports web site if your on the racing program) go for: gulp....Round numbers...... Roof: $4.7K, Fender: $1,500, Door: 2.3K, Rear Bumper: 3.9K, and my personal favorite---CF Dash: 1.6K
The CF stuff comes from a name all serious Mazda fans should know: Jim Downing. You want to learn a few things about how Mazda took off in Road Racing in the US? Read Downings web site. Not alot of RX-8 info but Mazda in general. Oh... another thing. The 3 rotors run a stock Mazda RX8 paper air filter---yep. The big square bone stock one. David told me there was a 1 hp loss in engine dyno testing but tons better filtration.

Sorry guys. I almost forgot. This is the mother lode. Hope it's not a repost:
Check the price tag. Note there is NO motor, engine mngt and data acq. Don't know what a 3 rotor runs but the 4.3 Bosch goes for about 30K with all the jazz. An ADL2 Motec with harness and a ton of sensors can easily go 15K+ (the ADL2 is the display or what some people think is a "dashboard"). It's the display located just over the steering wheel and backlit in a light green color. The popular ADL2 (we have one) goes for a bit over $6K No wires. No wiring harness. No sensors. Just a little sexy display that looks like one of those handheld gameboy/nintendo things the kids play. Here is a pic of the display and the Motec website: http://www.motec.com.au/home
A bit more trivia: The first RX-8 Grand-Am ST cars (like the FE cars we all drive---not the GT 3 rotors) ran on Motec engine management. This means the RX-8's stock ECM or ECU or whatever we choose to call it (like a Cobb) was a Motec. Plugged right into the stock wiring harness. Cars made about 215 rear wheel hp with a header made by Howerton. They used the stock airbox, stock internals, no porting, no tricky stuff. Basically a Mazda crate motor. 8,700 rpm ignition cut or rev limiter. Check that. 8,700 might of been a soft cut and 8,900 hard cut. One of the two. Apologies.

And of course you MUST go to the 24 hours of Daytona. Once you go you want to go every year. Fly into Orlando (cheap avail flights), stay on the beach (about $70 a night double occ) and buy any of the numerous ticket packages. One of the best is the Grass Roots Motorsports deal.
Let you in on a little secret-----go to the driver's and team owner's meetings and sit in the back row. Not only will you see many, many famous drivers but you'll learn a ton. But you didn't hear that from me.

You are so right about being there...
I have been going to the 24 hours of Daytona events since my days as a Boy Scout when we would camp in the infield.
Really enjoyed our time with you, Marlon and the guys last year!
I would love to be there again this year, but I just got back from Haiti and have given them money that I haven't even made yet.

I won't be driving my 8 there , but look for me, I will be the guy wearing the black hat with yellow Mazdaspeed on it. If I do drive my 8 there do I have to pay a special fee to park in the Mazda section on Saturday?

The SpeedSource #70 car was fastest in Practice Session 1 this morning and 2nd fastest in Practice session #2 this afternoon (behind the #41 Dempsey racing RX-8). They're definitely on pace!!!!

Porsche and BMW (!) not far off pace though. #69 was almost a second behind #70 though. The Camaro's weren't even the fastest Chevys on the course. Didn't think anyone was going to run the Vettes this season but it looks like there were 2 out there. Cool.

This was just posted to the Live Updates:
However timing shows that Jeff Seagl posted that time in the #69, while the #70 is now in third place...
Sylvain Tremblay posted the fastest GT qualifying time, besting the field with a time of 1:49.282 (117.274 mph).
