Its Official! Ferrari Confirm Michael Schumacher will Replace Felipe Massa

Michael Schumacher on Wednesday announced he is looking forward to the challenge of replacing his injured former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa at forthcoming grands prix.

"I met this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe," the 40-year-old German, who retired in 2006, said.

Schumacher hung up his helmet as a record-holding seven time world champion and winner of 91 grands prix and insists he has never regretted his decision.

"Though it is true that the formula one chapter was completely closed for me a long time ago, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore (this) unfortunate situation," he added.

"But as the competitor I am I also very much look forward to facing this challenge," said Schumacher.

Ferrari also confirmed the news, following reports in the respectively German and Swiss newspapers Bild and Blick.

The Italian team said it will enter Schumacher as the alternative competitor of Massa's car number 3 following a training programme for the German, who earlier this year hurt his neck in a motorcycle testing crash.

"I really can't tell you if his neck would be fine to drive an F1 race ... and remember he is a 40-year-old man, too," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said on Tuesday.

Ferrari Statement

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro intends to put Michael Schumacher in Felipe Massa's car untill the brazilian driver will be able to race again. Michael Schumacher said he is ready and, over the next few days, will undertake a specifc training programme at the end of which confermation will be given of his participation in the Championship with effect from the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August

Well he is 40 now and hasn't raced it 2(?) seasons. I don't expect him to win. I do expect him to be in the top 5 or 6.

This is going to make me watch the next F1 race. Maybe Kimi will run into him and take both cars out.

I want to see the battle between him and Rubens, now that the two cars are similar in speed.

It wouldn't surprise me if these sources got their news mixed with rumor.

Either way it's going to be awesome and great for ratings!

I'd like to see a true head to head shootout between Hamilton and Schue in equally competitive cars in race form. When Hamilton showed up in a competitive McLaren he just started dominating and I wondered if Schue was sitting at home going. "I wonder would it would be like to race him."

Dunno, Schumi is a true champion. Hamilton needed the best car to struggle 'till the last race last year. Hamilton is a world champion because of lucky circumstances, where was he this year when his car was not the best one? He was whining in the last positions.
Vettel and Schumi, that is the real deal!

And he's not a two time champion due to unlucky circumstances.

He can drive he just made some stupid mistakes last year and the year before. It's not like any of these guys are chumps out on the track. Even Piquet is probably in the top 0.1% of race drivers in the world. Vettel will be a good comparo as well as both are aggressive fast drivers that would give him a run for his money even in the rain.

not sure how you tooke comments such as these " yes our car needs alot of work, but me and the team will get the car up to par" doesnt sound like he was whinning lol. to me, he has fullfield what he and his team set out to do. and guess what they won last weeks race because of it lol.

and the same thing can be said about any of the top tier teams of last year. their car where lacking. but at least mclaren improved, where we see ferrari saying comments like, well its kinda of to late to improve on 09 car, we just going to start focusing on 2010 car. sounds like ferrari is the whinners here.

Don't forget what Hamilton has done against Alonso in equal cars. The best perspective I think came from Michael when asked what he thought about Hamilton's abilities (I think it can still be found on Youtube). Is Vettel even more talented than Lewis? Time will tell.

Paul.

Vettel is less lucky than Lewis, that's for sure. His car was not the best last year but he managed to do some interesting tricks anyway. Hamilton is a skilled driver and i really admit it but defining him as a champion i don't really know... that word doesn't fit him!
Alonso is way better imho but he has got a superstar attitude that i don't like at times.
Last year ferrari managed to get close to winning a championship beacuse of its driver skills (Massa), if they didn't win is just because the cars were so unreliable and "unstable"during their development.
Button, on the other hand, makes me laugh. He played like the super driver untill the other makers caught brawn up and then? nothing.

1. such as, winning one race for the season? not that i have anything against vettel.

2. oh really. can you tell me how many point's hamilton and alonso had , when they where team mates ? lol oh like to add, in 2007 when hamilton and alonso where team mates. hamilton won 4 races compared to alonso 2. not sure how a driver with no skills such as hamilton out done a superstar like alonso. guess skill wasnt the reason but hey, you are entiled to your opinion

Kimi -110
Hamilton -109
Alosno-109
Massa 94
oh btw only reason why kimi won the championship , is because massa car surprisingly slowed down. which allowed kimi to pass. guess either A. Team orders or B. the common ferrari engine always breaking.

3. guess if massa would of won the championship, he would only have a 1 point lead over hamilton. so i guess hamilton didnt have any skills to be kneck to kneck to massa.

oh btw for 2008, massa won 6 races and hamilton won 5. i guess skill wasnt the reason why hamilton won 5 races.

i love hamilton haters, love replying to their comments. makes the day interesting

but jokes aside, its good seeing you back bse50

Sorry, as an old bloke, I have not been that big of fan of Schuey, he may have a 'record' but he is NOT the best driver ever, in my time that goes to Senna.

Schuey was good because the others (cars) were so bad.

Will be interesting to see how he goes..

When Schumacher was racing, I was sick of him and glad to see him retire. It got bored watching each race as the result was always the same. Now that he's been gone a while, I'm kind of excited to see him back for a few races. With all of the bad press that F1 has been getting with all of their internal crap, it'll be nice to step back for a while and see something familiar. It's not boring if you don't see it everyday. It should definitely help boost ratings for the rest of the year.

A couple of people down the hall were like WTF...what the hell is up with Steve? The funny thing is...while I have a great deal of respect for what Schumacher has done for the sport and all of his accomplishments, I wasn't a straight up fan. But in this situation....I'm going to be rooting for the guy! This is awesome....now all we need is JV in the Renault and damn, it's a masters session. Agree Senna would be tops. Unfortunately he's not able to attend.
