Fuel mileage would suck for a gas turbine. I don't think it would be a viable option.

F1 warms to a return to USA

http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/s...ml?CMP=OTC-RSS

Tony George is trying to bring Formula One racing back to the United States, but not necessarily to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, according to a report in the Indianapolis Business Journal.
While Indianapolis is the historical home for F1 in the USA - the Indianapolis 500 was included in the world championship from its inception in 1950 for more than a decade - Ecclestone has made no secret of his desire to host a race in or near New York. On top of that, business experts said Ecclestone would have to lower the F1 sanctioning fee, which ranges from $10 million to $30 million annually, to make the race feasible in Indianapolis.
I wonder it this a return to the Glen or the rumored street circut in NYC?

When asked whether or not Indianapolis was the best place for a potential round stateside, Ecclestone said: "Yeah, it is. It's only the fact that it's all the wrong crowd and the wrong people. Nothing worked there really. We'd have to have a big change round. But we'd like to get back there."
Wrong crowd? The speedway was sold out each year and had the largest crowds of any race.

While some fear F1's return to Indianapolis, other worry about the consequences if it did not locate there. "If the world's top level of motor racing returned to the US and didn't locate at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you'd really have to scratch your head," Tim Frost, president of a Chicago-based motorsports business consultancy

gas turbine engine? single engine manufacturer? If they really have to try and kill the series why don't they just cancel it?

Exactly, I wouldnt need to wake up at awkward hours to watch races any more. In fact, I'll just start watching Indy series then. I watch F1 along with 90% of the other ppl , to see engine , car company , team and driver rivary. I dont watch F1 to see a single engine supplier, the race series wouldnt be worth watching any more.

F1 teams are close to agreeing upon a new engine formula for the six-year period beginning in 2013.

Until then, development of the current 2.4 litre V8s will remain 'frozen', to be replaced thereafter by similarly powerful engines that use less fuel, emit less pollution and are affordable for the small teams.

Spain's El Mundo Deportivo newspaper said an in-principle agreement has been reached for a four cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection.

The new formula would reportedly also involve KERS.

"If F1 has to develop something helpful for real (road) driving conditions, then the best solution is for an engine that is turbocharged and GDI (gasoline direct injection," Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa told Autocar magazine at the Beijing Motor Show.

"That is what we would support," he said.

Mercedes' Norbert Haug agrees that smaller engines are likely for reasons of consumption and emissions, but warns that high technology needs to remain a crucial focus.

"If you fly from Europe to Japan on a 747, you would use more fuel than an entire F1 season. We need to see the whole picture," he insisted.

Note: Mercedes turbo photo used for illustrative purposes. Not actual unit.

That, I can agree with, except for the turbo. Didn't we learn in the 80's what a problem turbo race engines can be. Both to regulate and for reliability. We will have one team that gets it right and will dominate the series like Renault and Honda did.

It is Jenson Button's "really intelligent approach" that is paying off so far in 2010, according to his former boss Ross Brawn.

After two wins on damp tracks so far in 2010, the reigning world champion is currently leading the world championship.

But throughout the winter, most experts predicted that Button, 30, would be blown away at least initially by Lewis Hamilton.

His friend David Coulthard wrote in his latest Telegraph column: "I told you so."

Brawn, who replaced Button with Michael Schumacher this year but insists the Briton switched to McLaren for the new challenge, told Reuters that F1 is again seeing the "natural Jenson" who won many races early in 2009.

Brawn said the more conservative and tense driver in the second half of the season was the result of the "pressures" of the championship battle.

"He's not looked necessarily quicker than Lewis, but he's doing a better job and he's getting the results," he added.

Former long time McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa said most paddock regulars did not expect Button to have the upper hand over Hamilton.

"Hardly anyone counted on that," he told the Swiss newspaper Blick.

"He (Button) has stayed calm and had very few problems with the tyres. But I know Hamilton's strengths. He will soon wake up and strike back," de la Rosa predicted.

Indeed, when asked to name his picks for the eventual title battle, the Spaniard answered: "Good question, difficult answer.

"Hamilton, Vettel or Alonso -- and not necessarily in that order!"

Pedro de la Rosa has singled out Renault as the "biggest surprise" of the 2010 season so far.

With the wounds of the crashgate scandal still fresh, the Enstone based team went into March's season opener with new owners and management.

In winter testing, Renault's was among the slowest of the established cars, with a single seater that closely resembled last year's uncompetitive R29.

But after four races, the R30 is a healthy fifth in the constructors' standings behind the prominent top-four title protagonists.

Team newcomer Robert Kubica, now linked with a move for 2011 to Ferrari, has never been out of the final 'Q3' group this year, and was even on the podium in Australia.

Asked to nominate his biggest surprise of 2010, Sauber racer and F1 veteran Pedro de la Rosa answered: "For most people in the paddock it is Renault.

"The performance of the team, and particularly Kubica, has been sensational. In testing we were usually quicker than them," de la Rosa told the Swiss newspaper Blick

Alonso’s thumbs insured for 10m euros

Ferrari sponsor Santander has insured Fernando Alonso’s thumbs for five million euros (£4.3m) each.

The Spanish financial services giant announced at an event in Madrid on Monday that it had signed a new one-year personal sponsorship deal with Alonso, who will now be sponsored by the company’s insurance arm as well as its banking division.

The double world champion has been given accident and life insurance, with special cover for his thumbs, as part of a Santander publicity campaign ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

“Alonso’s thumbs are a symbol, as well as being essential for driving a Formula 1 car, in that they make a sign of victory and show that everything is under control and well protected,” Santander said in a statement.

Alonso added: “Being close to risk in my profession made me understand that protection is a fundamental aspect.

“I knew that Santander is the best bank in the world, but now I’ve discovered that they are also leaders in insurance.

“So I could only choose one of the best possible partners in this field.”

LOL I no longer listen to any other kinds of music any more. The only song I shall ever listen to till the day I die is the Hamilton song. It has a combination of classic rock, Hip hop, classical music , jazz and indie music. So I no longer have to dl other bands music any more.

Ty Lewis ,you are truly the "best around, no one can ever beat you DOWWWNn (song taken from the original Karate Kid sound track).
