Brawn: The 'true Schumi' set to return

Formula 1 will again see the “true” Michael Schumacher in action next season when Pirelli introduces its new tyre into the sport, his Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn has confidently predicted.

In his first year out of retirement Schumacher has failed to get any where near the heights he achieved during his previous career and been unable to match team-mate Nico Rosberg’s speed on a consistent basis.

Both Mercedes and Schumacher have blamed his struggles on an inability to match his driving style to the team’s 2010 car and narrower Bridgestone front tyres – although many pundits have suggested that the once-all-conquering German has simply lost his old speed.

Brawn though insists that Schumacher’s skills are undiminished in many areas and it’s just his problems getting the best out of tyres in slow corners that have restricted him.

“If you take the telemetry data in fast corners or his reaction time when the car breaks away, I don’t see any difference,” he said in an interview with the official F1 website.

“There he’s still the old Michael. But in the slow corners he cannot make full use of the tyres as Nico can.

“Nico has put the bar very high in this respect.

“But I guess that’s okay for Michael as he clearly sees where he has to improve. I predict that in 2011 we will again see the true Michael - when we’ve delivered him a better car.”

F1 will switch to Pirelli tyres next season and, while Brawn concedes he doesn't yet have lots of data on the Italian firm’s in-development 2011 rubber, he is confident they will be more favorable towards Schumacher’s natural ‘pointy’ turn-in style.

“As particular as the Bridgestone tyres have been this year I don’t expect the Pirelli tyres to be,” he said.

“There has even been a change for the worse from 2009 to 2010 - something that we had not anticipated and thus had not considered for our weight distribution.

“Next year we expect the Pirelli tyres will work better for Michael’s driving style and only then will we know if Nico really is quicker than Michael.”

In the record-breaking first part of his F1 career, Schumacher claimed at least one victory and five podium finishes per season in his full campaigns – but since his comeback he has yet to finish higher than fourth and has claimed just 46 points to Rosberg’s 122.

Brawn admits that had any other driver than Schumacher achieved such middling results this year they would have likely lost their seat for next season.

But, given that it is the seven-time champion behind the wheel, Brawn is adamant there is more to come once Mercedes gives him a car he can work with better.

“To be honest, probably not,” he said when asked if another driver would be dropped if they had Schumacher’s 2010 results.

“But because we know Michael, we know that there is still a lot to come because Michael is in many fields more talented than others - in driving and in the cooperation with the team.

“The team are very happy with the way Michael is contributing. If he were a rookie we surely would have asked ourselves if he has the capacity to advance. With Michael we know that he has.”

As well as increased rumours about whether Schumacher will return for 2011, recent speculation has also centered on the relationship between Brawn and his Brackley team’s German manufacturer paymasters amid Mercedes's poor season.

Brawn denies there is currently any friction between him and Mercedes although he says there is probably scope to improve its working relationship.

“It’s sad that such rumours always get around. But let’s be clear - none of us are happy with the performance this year, and of course Mercedes want to know how and when we will improve,” he said.

“But nobody needs to tell me that it is important to win.

“And probably we can still improve the relationship between Brackley and the Mercedes engine factory, but Mercedes is very open to all suggestions. So at the moment there are no problems whatsoever. They will come if we are not able to improve in the future.”

I'll be honest - I never liked Michael. I have been following F1 religiously since the BAR Honda days. I am a bit of a closet Honda fanboi. With the team evolving into the now, mercedes GP team and Michael joining forces, I am sympathetic towards Shumi. He has never shone compared to his younger german teammate to date, but I am willing to give him another year to prove he still got what it takes. Eddie Jordan went as far as to say after the Singapore GP performance from Shumi, he would have sacked him. Michael has immense pressure to live up to his glory days. He knows more than anyone how much next year's car is riding on this. Give Shumi a chance.

Geez. He at least could have blamed it on the poor weight distribution of the car or the fact that it was built with Jenson's driving style in mind instead of Schumachers. To blame it on the tires, the one thing that is constant across all cars, is pretty silly.

If your blaming it on tires, your blaming it on team strategy or an overly aggressive driving style.

In contrast to Vettel, Hamilton generally keeps his cool. The crash in the prior race could be considered his mistake (Miscalculation perhaps). This last one was really Webber's fault but hard to call.

Lewis is the king of making passes and the smaller front tires this year work against his super late braking style a bit.

It will be tough for him to win the championship but if the equipment progresses enough, he'll be hard to beat.

Paul.

For sure, if the 2 have to fight for the title Webber will have to step aside and focus on the championship he may or may not win in the next life

something I would say "making good use of stress". Maybe his whinining in Italy translate to sweet music, but in the rest of the world we call that Bxxtching.

I have never been a MS fan, but as a driver he is one of the best out there. Not sure why the F1 pundits want to write him off after one season. MS, Jenson, and Brawn had said the car was just made for Jenson. The rules of tires has changed since the days of MS dominating F1. Ill make my opinion on MS next year, when the car is design is based off of MS thoughts, and not some driver who is not even on the team any more.

I was a huge Mika fan, but even Mika feels that MS has yet to show his true potential.

Personally I think MS is using this year to brush up.

Foreign Media Question F1 Korea Grand Prix

Doubts have flared up over whether the Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix will take place, as foreign media have questioned the convening of the event some 20 days before its opening.

The Korea Auto Valley Operation, the Korean operator of the championship, and the event`s organizing committee said the completion of the racetrack has been delayed but denied a problem in hosting the event whatsoever.

Austin GP organisers insist 2012 race is not in doubt

Organisers of the United States Grand Prix at a new site in Austin, Texas insist the race will go ahead in 2012.

Rumours surfaced in the paddock during last weekend's Singapore Grand Prix that the event was already in doubt.
........
BBC pundit Martin Brundle raised the issue during the Formula 1 forum after Sunday's race in Singapore, amid rumours the local authorities had not been properly consulted over the plans and with fears over road links to the site which is expected to attract 120,000 fans.

Toro Rosso fires mechanic after Singapore incident - report

A mechanic has been dismissed by Toro Rosso following an incident before Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix.

Jaime Alguersuari qualified a strong eleventh under the street circuit's lights, but then had to start the race from the pitlane due to a coolant leak.

"My hopes of having a good day disappeared," recalled the Spaniard.

According to Spanish reports, including in the AS newspaper and the Motor21 website, an unnamed mechanic apparently discovered the leak with five hours to spare but did nothing but regularly wipe up the water puddle.

The problem therefore only came to the attention of the Faenza based team in general after Alguersuari left the pits to form up on the grid. There was then not enough time to replace the radiator before the pitlane closed.

Toro Rosso has been contacted for comment.

THey better be having the race in Austin in 2012 or I am going to be pissed, and I am going to blame Ferrari if it doesn't happen.

Rumours that the Faenza based formula one team Toro Rosso is for sale are gathering pace.

Last week, we reported speculation that Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz wants to sell his second F1 outfit.

The original Swiss report had said the Austrian billionaire might be able to triple his money, after buying Minardi from Paul Stoddart in 2006 for just $40m.

But Italy's 422race.com said the outfit's price-tag is now just $30 million.

"There are ongoing rumours, but currently we have no plans to buy Toro Rosso," said Mateschitz's personal assistant.

The Italian report said there are several potential buyers, including Villeneuve/Durango, a group from the Far East, and Carlos Slim, the wealthiest person in the world.

But the Mexican Slim, with a net worth of more than $60 billion, is thought keener to buy into Sauber, with his interest in Toro Rosso perhaps just a negotiating ploy.

Ratings firm Nielsen estimated this week that energy drink sales have fallen one per cent.

Porsche thinking of joining the F1 world again?

Another fascinating rumour at the Paris motor show is that Porsche could soon be on the formula one grid.

Earlier this year, it was reported the sports car marque's German parent Volkswagen might enter the sport when the engine regulations change in 2013.

At the time, it was suggested that either Audi or Porsche branding was likely.

Porsche's new chief executive Matthias Mueller was asked at the Paris motor show this week whether it made sense for both Porsche and Audi to compete at Le Mans.

"We do not like to both go into LMP1; that is not so funny," he is quoted by Autocar.

"So therefore we have to discuss whether it makes better sense for one of the brands to go into LMP1, and the other brand into formula one. So we will have a round-table to discuss the pros and cons," added Mueller.

In June this year, Audi's motor sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich said F1 and Audi "do not fit".

Porsche last competed in F1 as an engine supplier to Footwork in 1991.

Mueller also said in Paris that Volkswagen is considering a foray in NASCAR, with talks with the popular American series to reportedly begin after the current season.

Stuttgart-based Porsche's revenues have risen 18 per cent to a record high, totalling EUR 7.8 billion in the latest financial year.

"Porsche will continue the positive trend in the current business year," confirmed outgoing chief executive Michael Macht.

I could see them as a engine supplier for one team. I don't see them as a complete team. Then there is the full grid in 2012 to contend with. They wouldn't be able to get together a bid for the last grid spot for 2011.
VW in NASCAR, never.

Oh now you want a Strong Massa, well you should of let him won Germany.

Love the shirt Alonso, looks pretty ghey to me

Luca di Montezemolo has spelled out Felipe Massa's supporting role in the 2010 world championship, showing no regret for the decision to put the "focus" of the Ferrari challenge on number 1 driver Fernando Alonso.

Speaking at the Paris motor show on Thursday, the Ferrari president urged Brazilian Massa to show a better performance at the decisive races, having struggled with the F10 recently.

"I have waited for Felipe with great perseverance in the last four races," Montezemolo is quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I want a strong Massa who will shave points off the rivals," he added.

On the other hand, Spaniard Alonso has won the past two races from pole, and has been in Ferrari's box seat at least since July's German grand prix, where Massa was controversially moved aside whilst leading.

"The decision to focus on Alonso has been proven to be right," said Montezemolo.

"He is extremely strong and very close to the team, and has been able to blend in well from day one despite the concerns of some," he added.

Montezemolo showed no regrets about Ferrari's stance; a philosophy not so openly embraced by the Maranello based team's championships rivals Red Bull and McLaren.

"Those who race for Ferrari don't race for themselves, but for the Ferrari team colours," said the Italian.

"One who wants to race for himself will have to face his team," Montezemolo insisted

Don't be an *******, *******
Seriously though i am disappointed with ferrari but still Lewis is stuck in an uncomfortable situation. They did some outstanding performances when they were fighting with redbull alone but now that they have Ferrari to take care of as well it may be just too much for their car (notice that i said car and not drivers, what an ambassador am i? ).
On a sidenote I'm afraid for next year... what if the dumbarses in maranello only focused on this year's car?
