Ferrari has a problem. Although Fernando Alonso leads the drivers' world championship by 40 points, the team is 57 points off the pace in the constructors' championship. Last year, Felipe Massa scored just 45% of Alonso's total; this year, so far, he stands at 15%. It all adds up to a new driver for 2013. But who?

The first layer of tarmac has been laid at the Circuit of the Americas ahead of the return of the US Grand Prix to the calendar in November.
The circuit outside Austin has been making steady progress since construction halted over the winter due to a contractual dispute. The process known as "marrying the track" was completed last week as strip of tarmac was laid on the pit straight.

Organisers for the returning United States Grand Prix have announced that a music concert will be taking place on the November weekend. The race is likely to be vital in the 2012 championship, hosting the penultimate meeting of the season before Brazil.

Hewland Engineering founder Mike Hewland dies aged 89
Mike Hewland, founder of the Hewland Engineering company that became synonymous with motorsport transmission technology, has died at the age of 89.
Formed in 1957, Hewland Engineering's first Formula 1 involvement was altering a gearbox for the British Racing Partnership team, before the company really made its name in Formula Junior.
From there, the Hewland business grew to such an extent that for much of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, almost the entire F1 field ran its gearboxes, with Ferrari the only exception for a long period. The package of a Cosworth DFV engine mated to a Hewland gearbox dominated most of the era.
Mike Hewland retired in 1991, with his son William taking over at the helm of Hewland Engineering.

Ferrari has revealed that its new 2014 engine is running on the dyno at its Maranello factory.
With Formula 1 engine manufacturers Renault and Mercedes already believed to have begun bench tests of their new power-units, Ferrari's head of engine and electronics Luca Marmorini says that his outfit is also well-advanced with its work.

Organisers of the Grand Prix of America are hoping to put on a show akin to the NFL's Super Bowl when next year's race takes place in New Jersey.
The 3.2-mile circuit will be built in the districts of Weehawken and West New York with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Chief Operations Officer Dennis Robinson is hoping the size and scale of the event will rival the biggest sporting events in the USA.

Having started eighth on the grid, the Lotus driver put the squeeze on Lewis Hamilton's McLaren on the approach for La Source and that triggered a major pile-up on the first corner.
Both Grosjean and Hamilton were forced to retire along with Sergio Perez of Sauber and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who was lucky to escape serious injury after the airborne Lotus went flying just a few inches past his head.
