No way. This time, I had someone clock me. First up was the Evo IX. The car took off like a bullet, and it exhibited amazing balance through the sweepers and esses. The IX clocked in at 1 minute 55.20 sec. Now it was time for the Evo X in full auto mode. The TC-SST was fantastic, shifting exactly where I would have if I were in control. Also, I realized I was doing much less steering through most of the corners because the car wasn't getting out of shape. I went through the esses without any steering correction, virtually flat-out. I crossed the finish line in 1:54.18, more than a second faster than the IX!
Yah, I really enjoyed that last part of the article. This opens up the whole "do you really want to go fast" or "do you want to feel like you're going fast" debate.

I would imagine most folks here are more into "feel like you're fast", so they're going to hate on the Evo X.

Best motoring review of the RX-8, anyone want to translate the whole thing?

Now this is irony. I just sold my Evo for an RX-8. I wanted a better autocrosser and I didn't have the mega dollars needed to prep the Evo for BSP. So I am coming to BS in the Rex.

I think that the Evo X will not be as good of an autocrosser as the previous models. It may be a better track car but I think that it will be too heavy for autocross. I also think that all of the electronics on it will get confused by the quick transitions on an autocross course.

Something about the having to fight for control with the EVO. Alot of steering feedback. Not as delicately balanced to drive as the RX-8 or S2000. Recommended to be used for Tokyo Taxi Services Inc.
Cheesy suited Mitsu salesman making some references to local Geishas having discounts. You're welcome.

Why didn't you go STU? The Evo is certainly capable of winning that class even though it hasn't happened yet. Anyhow, welcome to spec RX-... errr... B stock

Despite the weight I think the Evo X will be a TINY bit better autox car and I seriously doubt the electronics are going to get "confused". However, I don't see it ever winning AS. It's probably not much of a stretch to say that it will win SM eventually as well as BSP and STU.

Looks like the curb weight will be at 1520kgs (3351lbs). That's better than I expected. However, and unless my eyes are deceiving me, it looks like the steering ratio has been dumbed down a little. Doesn't look as quick as before. Any other Evo owners notice this?

What an ugly looking RX-8 in that video.

Also, I think there's something wrong with the audio. I couldn't understand anything he was saying. And did anyone notice that he pushed the SST to 8k numerous times? An what were those numbers? They appears to be track times or something, but I didn't get the second set of numbers. Perhaps that was the launch RPMs and they couldn't launch the SST at higher than 600 RPMs?

Yep I see it. Also, there's something about the comparison that makes the Evo IX look like it's the car I'd rather drive, it just seems more snappy and tossable.

Yeah, from that video I'd have to agree. However, it's quite possible that the Evo X will be easier to drive fast because it will feel more in control with all the electronic doo-dads. If true, I know some people wouldn't like that, but for me, on a street car, I'd rather have the car that I don't have to push too close to the limit to have fun.

I ran STU for 3 years and did well at it. I got tired of street tires, though. I had an RS which meant no ABS. It was light and quick but I was always losing out in the braking aspect. Race rubber would help with that. I was one step away from taking the car to BSP until I realized the cost involved with setting up a car I had already abused for 3 years. Long story short, I was able to trade out of the Evo into an '07 RX-8 for about even money after parting it out. Now I am ready for race rubber in a new car with proper RWD and ABS. I can't wait til next year. Besides rumor has it that the BS index will be good and STU index will be crap for next year.

It will be interesting to see how the Evo X does. In past, the electronics tends to get confused on an autocross car but we will have to wait to see. I also hear some rumors about an RS version of the Evo X hitting the states. It may be just as light as the IX and may even have ABS as an option. That is pure speculation now though.

I'm sorry... the best looking Mitsubshi was the 3000 GTVR4 I owned.
Always been a fan of the Mitsu family. Had several of them. there's still one in my driveway.

The EVO's are FUGY!

But this one finally looks nice... I may just go back. I wish the interior was nicer.

Old rumor but I still believe it to be true... Most likely the prices will go up by about 2k for each trim level.

Yeah thats the last I heard too. 39-40k for an MR is going to be interesting (assuming the make an MR trim).

If this information is right then what I've been saying for over a year about pricing was right. The idea of them selling Evo's in any trim for $39-40k is insane. I'm not going to say that they'd never do that, but they'd be crazy for trying.

Even considering the X had some issues I can't say this is making me want to trade my Evo VIII in...

I think we have all speculated correctly for more than a year now that if you want a raw driving experience, the Evo X is not going to outshine the IX or even VIII. Even so, the Evo X is pretty impressive and sacrifices a small amount of rawness for practicality. Maybe that makes it slightly more appealing to the masses, but the Evo X is still a niche car. I love the idea of a car that's easy to drive fast that lets me have fun while keeping me relatively safe and in control. If I wanted 600 hp and/or to really push myself I'd go to a track.

And the final verdict is definitely going to have to wait until we see an actual US-spec production car. All these current comparisons are premature. If the Evo X MR w/ SST has a 5+ second 0-60 time then I will personally call the Evo X a bust (at least for me). Until then, the wait continues.

I bet the MR is slower because Mitsibishi will prevent it from being launched hard.

i wouldn't call it bust just yet, if you can spend $1500-$2000 aftermarket and get the X into the 12's and sub 5's 0-60's then it's still a great deal w/ all the safety and features that the X offers over the IX.

I'm not calling it a bust as I am quite confident it will sell much better than previous versions have. However, it's no longer the drivers car that it was and it will disappoint a lot of people that love their current Evos.

Hell, it may even turn out to be quicker around a track, but the E36 M3 was quicker around a track than the E30 M3, but there's no doubt in my mind which one is the better drivers car. Except in this instance the better drivers car also happens to be faster in a straight line.
