Sigh.
That's the "NB" generation Mazdaspeed Miata. "NC" is the current 3rd generation Miata (bar of soap look) and has no Mazdaspeed version as of yet. The NB almost shares no components with the NC so...
1). A comparo between a 2004/2005 model car vs a brand new Saturn Redline would not make more sense.
2). There can be no comparo vs a new model Mazdaspeed Miata because a production model doesn't exist.
Now i'd agree with you if you had said they should be comparing the base MY07 Miata vs the base MY07 Sky.

3.) A comparo would be interesting, and not everyone buys their cars new.
4.) Top Gear isn't always strict about matching up cars by the exact same level/category/year/price/etc. anyway. Your talking about a show that once put a car up against an Olympic luge, ferchisake.

2). I'm sorry, you're correct but I wasn't the only one. I made a reasonable assumption.
3). IMO it would not be, b/c the NC Miata roughly equals the performance of the NB Mazdaspeed Miata.
4). Yup, which didn't make sense either.

What does a Mazdaspeed vehicle have that the Redline also has?
Think hard.
No, not tires. Try again.

In all seriousness, the Mazdaspeed Miata only has the new Miata beat by 8 HP and almost identical performance no matter how Mazda achieved it. Like I said, I think a better comparison even if only because the Sky and NC Miata currently directly compete in the marketplace in their current MY. Mazda doesn't have an answer for the Sky Redline yet.
I tend to shy away from idolizing Top Gear's methods. Most other comparos between the base Sky and base Miata are very close. I agree that they shouldn't be testing the Sky Redline vs the base Miata.
A lot of this is just opinion. Let's just agree to disagree and be done with it.
