Porsche Boxster

I had a 99. The original engine. My memory has the "8" in the same handling class. I know I can take right hand turns at 30 MPH again. The acceleration was about the same too as well as pull in the power band. You had to keep it in the upper ranges to get it going. It used oil (hum ...) but didn't have a scheduled oil change until 15,000 miles.
So from my perepecitve, it's a trade off of the rag top in it for the rear seat in the "8". But to be honest, I think the Boxster had more trunk space if you count both of it's trunks and don't count rear seat space in the "8". Of course there is a big cost difference too!

The owner of the company I used to work for had one and he let me drive it every now and then. Very fun car IMO. Great sounding engine good handling and not too windy with the top down. The interior is a bit tight for me and the egonomics are a bit strange.

Two years back when I was seriously considering buying an S2000 I also test drove a Boxster with the real intention of buying it should it prove to be better.
The base Boxster cost $42k, but of course you need to add money for unusual luxuries like cruise control ($600), trip computer ($300), trunk CD changer ($700 - no standard CD player), full leather seats ($2000), power seat adjustment ($1500), 17" wheel/tire package ($2600) or 18" wheel/tire package ($4400), floor mats ($320), metallic paint ($800-$3000) and so on.
I just chose a few of the above options (including 18" wheels/tires, metallic paint and leather power seats) and my fairly basic car cost over $52k (for a base Boxster, not an S).
I then test drove the car - what a let down. The gearshift was like a 2' tall knitting needle stirring porridge, the steering was slow and very heavy, the car did not dance like the S2000 and it was SLOW in everything it did. The build quality was OK however (shutlines, fitting, materials), but still not as good as the Honda. I told the sales guy how unimpressed I was with the test-drive so the dealership had their expert driver take me in the car through a short autocross course setup behind the dealership - sadly I was yawning through it it was so unimpressive.
In short if the $52k Boxster was even cheaper than the $32k S2000 I would have definitely gone with the Stook. Once I got my RX-8 (new baby put paid to ideas of 2-seat sports cars) I thought it handled better and has better steering/clutch/gearshift than the Boxster too.

Boxster aren't too bad a car at all.
Had the pleasure of driving the boss' S model and was left impressed until he took me for a ride in his GT2.
The Boxster has a poor image in Australia, it is seen as a "poverty pack" Porsche and is usually driven by arrogant pretentious ******* (at least over here anyway).
For a price of a Boxster S here in Australia, you can almost buy a BMW M3, which I would personally choose over it anyday.
At least in Australia, driving a Beemer, you are still considered a "tosser" but by no means in a "poverty pack" car.

I like the Boxster only as an S model. I like its lines because they are pretty unique and remind me of the 550 Spyder, but around here you see one every other car, it gets a little boring. Thats also why i have to remind myself just how unique a car Porsche makes whenever I see a GT2 or Carrera GT.

Everything I have read suggests that the Boxster S is much, much, much better than the base Boxster. Shame it costs so much (over $60k with a few options) but much better value than the regular Boxster based on capabilities.

Good review of the Boxster/S2k, pelucidor.
I'd take the S2k first any day over the Boxter (even S), the Z4, 350Z, any 2-seat roadster/convertible.
Can't beat the performance/price of the S2k for a 2-seater.

The regular boxster was underpowered 2.5 iterations.
The 2.7 is better. but only the 'S' has a 6 speed manual.
A 5 speed manual is just unacceptable.
good weight distributuion ~45/55 low moment of inertia.

We had one before. It's a truly great car for a single or a young couple without kids. My wife and I went a few times on holiday with it in France and Italy with luggage for one month (the spare tyre has to go though). Confortable and quiet as long as you drive it opened or with hardtop (with soft top up, it's noisy). Engine makes music : no need for a radio. Handling is brilliant until aquaplanning comes and you realise PCM comes as an option (whereas our ultra-safe Audi quattro has it (ESP) as standard!!). Ours was a second hand '97 2.5L with very plasticky interior, a real shame. It's better now.
We sold the Boxster when the baby came. No more regrets now that we have the RX8. As fun (minus soft top), more practical and more exclusive around here in Belgium!

I think the Boxster is a near perfect sports car. I drove a 2.7L car for about 30 minutes on some back roads - it was amazing. Drove 2 S2000s that same afternoon (both 2.0 and the new 2.2L model) and I'm sorry the Hondas are fine cars, faster to be sure, but the Boxster won my heart. Much better steering, much better throttle response in the low and mid range, much better sounds, much better looks, and much more room with the two trunks. The S2000 just didn't do it for me. If I were looking to buy a competitive BS autocross car, fine, I'd get the Honda. But if I was looking for a great road car the Boxster would win.
Having said that, the price differrence is criminal. It's tough to justify and I would never buy a new Boxster unless I was going to keep it a long time - the depreciation is brutal.

no offence, just my opinion... look at the back of the car, it looks like a human ***, with a hole in the middle...something like this (_*_)
