I suspect you'll be wrong about this like you were on the S2000 engine weight in another post. Without getting in 8 dyno issues, they usually dyno in the 180's vs. 160's for the lotus, but fine, you count 10. And can you back up your statement that the renesis is less reliable?
Other clear renesis advantages; smaller dimensions that would allow it to be placed lower in the car, higher rev capability, more linier powerband, smoother...
But yeah, the 2zz is more fuel efficient, like an elise owner really gives a ****.

The renesis gets bad mileage, but it would probably be noticeably better if it were in a car that weighed a half ton less. I suspect that's part of the reason why Mazda is interested in putting it in a much lighter car, as Zoom44 has hinted at. It might also weigh less than the Toyota motor if Mazda would get with the program and make an all-aluminum rotary.

I don't get why they still use the iron-aluminum sandwich. There's got to be a reason, but I'm at a loss.
The 2zz is a fantastic little motor, the best Toyota has built for production imo. But I really like the fact that the Renesis isn't much bigger than a duffle bag.

Could it be that iron and aluminum expand and contract at different rates? I dunno, just guessing.

I'm not going to get into another stupid argument. I could present facts til I'm blue in the face and the fanbois will still twist things around and believe what they want.
I will say for those of you saying the Elise/Exige would sound better with a Renesis have probably never heard one. They sound pretty incredible with the 2ZZ-GE.

True. But I can't see why not. Toyota reliability + Sports car = HEAVEN? Lol, seriously though, the time is ripe for toyota to give us a competitor for the 350z and the RX-8 that gets better gas mileage than both of them with comparable performance.

Well I've owned both the 2ZZ and the Renesis and I like the Renesis sound much more.
In my opinion, of Toyota's RWD sports car offerings in the '90s, only the MR2 is truly great; and even that car wasn't much of an improvement over the first generation. The Supra at 3500 pounds is just too heavy for my tastes.

Drop a 2jz engine in there. NO
About the mileage. What was the typical mpg on the 3rd gen 7? 16 or so? If it was then that really isnt' bad at all compared to the 8 considering it had twin turbos. I wish Mazda would have continued the light weight 2 seater car on the rx8. But I guess they wanted to appeal to a much larger crowd instead of rotary enthusiasts.
But yeah, putting a renesis in there does seem to fit a lot better than something heavier. Considering it is already very light weight it just seems to fit.
