Restoring a VW Bus
I'm just beginning the restoration of a 77 vw bus, and was wondering if anyone on these forums has any experience dealing with them, any tips, advice, or general suggestions would be helpful, compared to the 8, the thing is a breeze to work on, but help or advice never hurt. thanks.

Love those things. Years ago my friend restored one but he used it strickly for surfing. He installed carpet but nothing plush, more like put put carpet. I guess it depends on what level of restoration you are going for. I believe his was air cooled with the vents on the side and had some issues in traffic. If yours is air cooled you may want to look into an upgrade as far as cooling if it's air cooled like his.

Mine is a pretty basic restoration, it's pretty beat up, but only has 35k on it. I plan on making it just a little nicer than original, nothing extravagant, mostly for fun and the fact that it was free. Prob the same kind of carpet, only rusted through in 2 spots. and yeah it's air cooled, what kind of cooling upgrade? I haven't looked much as i've been more trying to just get it running, but yeah any advice would be amazingly appreciated.

My neighbor across the street has doen more than one and is int he middle of one right now. Ill see if he wants to sign up to the forum and put his thoughts in or at the least i llget some tipps from hi for you.
all the glass is out in his. the drive train is out . there was some sheet metal to replace and the whole head liner and interior is out and being redone. I think the paint is done now on his and its cleaned inside and out. he's going to get the whole underside sprayed with a something like rhino liner to keep the rust from coming back.
I'm trying to convince him to stick a rotary in it

**** carpeting would be awesome.
There's a shop right down the road from me that deals mostly with old beetles but they do the old vans and such too. I've been tempted to stop and ask how much some of their beetles are because that could be a fun project car.

Thanks guys, Right now it's still sitting, I was attempting to get it running today, new injectors, wires, distributor cap, plugs, flushed out the gas tank, replaced fuel lines, and battery, and right when I went to plug the spark plug wires into the plugs i hit a snag...the morons at advanced auto parts gave me the wrong ones, so I dont know if she'll start yet or not, because when i got the right ones, it started raining and I have to wait till tmro, but Im hopeful I 'll have it in the garage by tmro night and have started really tearing it apart, cant do much with it sitting on the street.

[QUOTE=getdamafiaonyou;3467383] what kind of cooling upgrade? QUOTE]
His was an older model so I'm not sure if you would have the same issue. I'm sure there has to be a fan or something out there by now if it's a problem.
