Yes they do need to put a twin turbo in it. Let face it, the RX-8 is a fun car to drive but it is WAY underpowered. Most of the fun of a sports car is in the lower end torque...which as we all know did not come standard in the 8. BTW the latest pics of the RX9 looks like the 370z. Time to test drive that Camaro...

A turbo is not needed. You don't know what numbers the 16x is going to put out, so saying it "NEEDS" to be turbo'd because you're expectations on what power it needs is not met *of course, those expectations will never be met....it will always need to be faster.*
/end rant

Yeah, let's twin turbo the Renesis. Let's totally forget about why the 3rd gen was a mechanical nightmare! It had cooling issues and troubleshooting a vacuum leak was harder than reaching up and touching the moon. We can't forget the few reasons they didn't turbo the rx8. Cost, reliability *Adding more to an engine...more to go wrong...* and emissions. Solve that for them, and they may be able to slap the turbo on.

There are a lot of manufacturers with reliable turboed cars out there like BMW, Audii, VW, Ford (but it is still a ford), Nissan, Pontiac, etc. Why not Mazda? Oh because YOU made that business decision!

The engine is under powered on the low end. This is not speculation, it is fact. It needs some air. Mazda can build it better and should. Mazda builds a nice car, I believe they can build the next toy to compete with the valve rattlers. One last note, this was not an inexpensive car and the new 8 is over $30K. I have no doubt the next one will cost even more. If they didnt put put turbos in it for cost savings, it was to increase their margin not yours!

I think that it doesn't need turbos but i say why not have an option for the turbocharged car. Make it more expensive and try to make it more reliable unlike the 7.

This is sad news. Close to 270 bhp from 1.6 is not good. Assuming it retains a similar, or even slightly better Torque per liter ratio, then the only way it could make less than 270 bhp is by making peak power at less than the current 8500, which most likely means a lower redline. Add to this a missing clutch pedal and you have effectively deleted two of the current rotary sports best attributes: Super high redline and near perfect six speed manual. Way to go mazda, I think these are great ideas.

RX-8 Replacement to be called RX-9??!!??
More info from "Inside Sources at Mazda" on the RX-8 replacement....to be called the RX-9
http://www.4wheelsnews.com/mazda-rx-...ails-revealed/
According to our source from Mazda, we found out today that the Japanese manufacturer is currently working on the next-generation of the RX-8, dubbed the RX-9.
Regarding the design of the car, few facts were confirmed: that the new vehicle will borrow the design lines from the Taiki Concept (shown in the photo and unveiled back in 2007 at the Tokyo Motor Show) and that the suicide doors found on the current version will also find their place in this new car. As you expected, the engine of the car will be a revolutionary 1.6-liter Birotor engine capable to develop around 300 hp. A debut is expected in 2012 but we might see this car earlier, our source confirmed.

Is that reliable info???
So I guess they'll retain RX-8 as a 4 seater coupe, thats not bad. I wonder what they will do about a rotary 2 seater. Engine option on the next gen MX-5?

Hard to imagine suicide doors on anything that looks much like the Taiki.

+1 If they want to save weight in a 2+2 version, definitely find a way to lighten the suicide door cofiguration w/o compromising side-impact safety.
These plans are full of win though! Bravo Mazda!!!
