RX-8 vs 05 Mustang
#2
I had the same dilemma. I went with the 8. Among other things, I realized that, having owned an 02 Stang, I didn't want another car that EVERYBODY in the world seemed to driving. Plus the four doors would be a big help in putting my new kid in the car. So those were two of the big reasons for me.

mark this thread as #1000 as the number of "RX8 vs. XXX" threads...
Honestly, it come down to what YOU want in a car. It doesn't matter what we think. Go test drive both, and choose the one you like better. Don't listen to people citing horsepower figures, gas mileage, etc. These things are matters of preference to the individual.

fwiw, insurance was a deciding factor for me - +$55 per month for an 05 MGT... compared to +$37/month for an RX8.

I've been lucky enough to test drive both at least once. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. To me the mustang is definitely a car for power junkies. It's got horses to spare after running a 0-60 real quick. But I didn't like the overall look of the mustang's exterior (especially the rear) and the inside felt and looked really cheap. I was also a little uncomfortable in there too which would translate to quick driver fatigue for me. The RX-8, while not quite as much power accelerated pretty well from 0-60 (more then enough for me). Plus overall it looks like a much nicer car both interior and exterior. The center console (where the radio, cd, a/c rest) looks a little funny but fits in well with the rest of the design scheme in the interior. I was definitely more comfortable sitting in the RX-8 as well (maybe because I'm a smaller person? 5"8'). One of my few complaints about the RX-8 is that it could use a larger spedometer but that's pretty minor. This is just my opinion so far and I'll probably test drive a little more before buying sometime early next year.

secondly, HP/Ecomony/etc. aren't just matters of opinion - this forum can provide HARD DATA to help people in making a decision.

HP/fuel economy are facts, yes. but they are everyone's opinion on if they are important on buying a car. most people here agree the the HP is not 238.....FACT. Some people's OPINION is that it doesn't matter. Other people's OPINION is that it matters a lot and they wind up selling the car. it all depends on each individual buying a car on what is important to them.
Please stop trying to turn around everything I type.

Now you are suggesting something different, than your previous post.
To remind you:
Don't listen to people citing horsepower figures, gas mileage, etc. These things are matters of preference to the individual.
Enjoy your day.

No Offence Mugatu, but you always complain in threads that I read, almost on a daily basis. You complain about how this thread shouldn't exist etc... You're taking away from my RX8 Forum experience.
I'd prefer if you don't like a thread to just not read it and move on to the next one, some of us ARE interested in reading an updated analysis of the '05 Mustang vs the 8.
God, you remind me of the real Mugatu... shudder... only not nearly as funny.
Sorry to high jack the thread, it's just everytime I see you post such negative comments I want to reply... finally I have and I feel much better.
I wondered how you got your post count so high.

It's already been said, this is a subjective decision that cannot be delegated to the thread participants. I recommend reading the "The little things" sticky thread in RX-8 Discussion. You'll find a WHOLE bunch of reasons why these people LOVE the 8. There's another thread where people vent their minor complaints about the 8 - do a search for it cause I can't remember the name of the thread. Ultimately it comes down to what you want, and what's important to you... But you already knew that.
If you're soliciting feedback I can add a little something else:
About a week after the 05 Mustangs showed up at the local Ford dealer I was there to pick up my wife who was having some work done on her truck. We went into the service desk and they did the write up on her truck and out we go to my 8 to go home while they do the work. We walked out and there were THREE mechanics out there giving my 8 a SERIOUS look!! One of them came up and started asking some questions. I ended up popping the hood and removing the engine cover so they could take a look. To be frank it was VERY flattering! My wife was even: "Hey that sucks, you have the cool car!" :p
Take it for what it is, just a story about some OTHER people that might have had a Mustang bias that really were impressed with the 8. Would that convince me to get the 8 over the Mustang? No, I bought the 8 for my own reasons but it sure made me feel good.
Good luck with your decision. I'm sure if you shop seriously and really consider what's important to you, you'll make a good decision. Enjoy it whatever it is.

It's excellent because you replied to a newbie showing respect, and without slamming them with the 'just f'ing search' bullshit which a few 'others' on the forum seem to love to use.
More people need to remember to simply 'be nice' to eachother.
:D
I hope to meet you at one of the local RX8 gatherings in the not-too-distant-future

Thanks look forward to meeting you too. Where in WA State are you? I'm actually out in Monroe WA, but nobodies ever heard of that so I say Seattle.
As you know, the weather sucks for it right now but we had a good gathering at Mt. St Helens a couple of months ago. Met lots of good people and had a blast driving the 8 like I seldom get the chance.
I'm sure when things dry up a bit people will be posting suggestions for rides in the NW owner forum. I can't justify the time for the periodic GT down in Olympia since it's just too far. Personally I'm hoping we can get some people to do the North Cascades loop over a weekend maybe this spring.

If your just looking for a good, fun, and well-handling sports car I would say go with the RX-8...but if you want something with alot more grunt and overall power, go with the GT Mustang. Either way I think you'll be a very happy man.

Sly Stallone (muscles, growling, grunting, macho) would probably drive the Mustang. Cary Grant (suave, sophisticated, with style and panache) would choose the RX-8 to navigate those twisty French Riveria roads with a cool blonde at his side. The choice is clear for me.
