RX-8 Vs GTO
What does everyone think?
who would win in 1/4 mile?
advantages to each car?
Style differences?
Drive?
Motor mods? (whos is more modable(if thats a word))
just wondering what everyones take is on these two brand new machines...

gto wins the 1/4 mile, hands down. rx-8 is more nimble + more fun to drive, the gto is a muscle car with a v8 and that goes a long way with some people. rx-8 ***** all over the gto in the style department IMHO. The renesis engine currently doesn't take too well to forced induction, i don't know about the GTO engine.

RX-8 = Beautiful automotive sculpture. Artfull design details galore.
New GTO= tired Detroit rehash. Almost as bad as when they slapped the SS Badge on the latest Impalla. Ghastly. At least the GTO has a V8.

wow, i didn't know everyone would hate me for asking your opinion... i thought thats what forums were for. i am sorry if i insulted anyone for asking what they thought of the two cars... you didn't need to treat it like that, i want to buy a new car, and wanted to see what people with the rx8 would think when compaired to the gto... i guess the Vs was a bad idea, but as you see i didn't just want to know who would be who but also wanted to know compaison on drivability, comfort, how the rotory engine takes to mods...
i am sorry for asking a stupid quesion, or so it seems... everyone who gave me thier two cents thank you, but the GTO crowd was nice enough to give me good info...
if you want another post after i testdrive them both i'll come back to post another Vs....

Drive both and get what's right for you- I personally found the GTO's interior less than inspiring, but I've never driven it, so I don't know how it handles. I can pretty much promise you the GTO will kick the 8's *** in a drag race, so if that's what you're looking for, the 8 probably isn't for you. But, I don't know how it handles, so the 8 may outdo it in that department.

The styling just doesnt do anything for me. It has a good engine, but *gasp* id rather take an evo or sti over it if you are into power. It's too bland and just a monaro rebagded as gto. Relating it to the rx-8, you cant go wrong with either one. It all comes down to taste. It has a lot of power, but it will feel big. The rx-8 doesnt have a lot of power, but it wont dissapoint you going into the turns. I'll give the pontiac one thing. It does have a nicer interior then a mustang .

You do realize that the GTO looks like a glorified Chevy Cavalier, right? Its body style is so UNinspired that it pains to look at it.
how you can compare the two is beyond me. Of course it comes down to the same thing for newbies: SPEED. how fast 0-60? how fast in the 1/4 mile? Ugh.

i used to see where you were coming from with the cavalier.... but when i saw it in person i don't think that so much anymore.
i actually like the look of the car, i know it is plain and boring to alot of people, but i like the look for some reason.
but on the other hand i like the RX-8 too, what kills me is i am seeing more and more RX-8s on the road... see one every day for last ten days
i am yet to see a GTO
i know many will say thats a reason to get the RX-8, because it is saying that it is a better car... i think that i am thinking too much and i should just drive them both and see what i think

Actually if there was another car that I'd consider in this price range, it would be the GTO rather than the G35 or the 350Z.
The interior in the GTO looks a lot better than those two, and you can actually get a red/black interior with GTO stitched into the seats. I wish RX-8 was stitched into our seats! For a GM car, it's unbelieveable...for everyone else, it's not bad.
The styling absolutely blows. In Pontiac-crazy Chicago, you look like every other Grand Prix out there. Even though it has true dual exhaust, it looks like a twin-pipe single exhaust. Also I figured that dealers would mark up the crap out of these cars, and I'd trust a first-year Mazda than a first-year GM car any day. I read in a Car & Driver first drive that bits were falling off of this car. I certainly hope that's been fixed in production.
The performance...c'mon it's a Corvette V8, how can it possibly suck?! One passed me when I was stopped in traffic the other day...it sounds absolutely mean! Maybe it's because I was raised on American cars, but I'd take a meaty V8 over an angry, blown 4 cylinder any day. I can't possibly compare the Wankel though, I'm still hooked on its "pissed-off superbike" sound. :D
The handling's supposed to be surprisingly decent too...again, for a GM car. 3800 lbs of Australian engineering could never keep up with a low-flying cruise missile from Hiroshima in the twisties though.
Overall I think the new GTO is a car to keep an eye on. Just like the original '64, it's little more than a hopped fleet vehicle at first but give it a few years and it will really shine. I'm sure they'll eventually drop in the LS6 (or upcoming LS2) and give it even bigger *****. They're going to do a number on the styling too, since this car was rushed to market very quickly, but it will never match the overall poise, balance, and beauty of the RX-8.

And then what are you left with? A stretched Cavalier with a Vette engine. Woopdie doo.

If they were the same price, I would say GTO. However, the RX-8 reasonably optioned is about $5K cheaper. That RX-8 won't have leather or any luxuries like that but it's not as if you can get the GTO without that stuff.
With a 350 HP LS1 true V8, it has the only V-8 engine in a near luxury vehicle for around $30K. It's a good deal but so is the RX-8.

The other day somebody parked their 2004 mustard yellow GTO right next to my Lighting Yellow RX-8 and side-by-side the GTO just looked like every other plain GM car. I did consider the GTO but after finding out it would cost me $600 more a year to insure than the RX-8 I had to ask myself how many times will I need to drive ¼ mile in under 14 seconds? What the RX-8 has to offer other than straight line performance beats the GTO. Also keep in mind the original concept of the GTO was to put a large motor into a plain Jane Tempest. I think GM unintentionally has kept up that tradition.

I think it was intentional. While on the subject, is XXX 2 coming out? Would anyone watch it with Ice Cube instead of Vin ?
