RX-8 Wannabe?? (aka Jaguar RD6)

anyone else see strong hints of the RX-8?
Well, my attachment ability lacks today. See Carconnection.com to see the Jaguar RD6 concept. The side view to me looks a whole lot like RX-8 - albeit with a Crossfire like bulb on the back and a futurustic Jag grille.

Ok, first time I say L337 was in that other post with the 14 yr/old, what the heck does it mean?

About the Jag, You betcha it's a freakin' copy!

But guess what the RX8 is a copy or at least lots of elements were taking from Austin Martin and a few other cars.

I like the Kusabi article toward the bottom.

Think of the Kusabi as a “pocket rocket version” of the new RX-8...

gracias wakeech. yes, that's the pic, I'm sure it's the article, and I'm fully aware of the Ford stake in Mazda, Jaguar, Volvo, etc. I'm fully aware that the LS and the X-Type were developed together, etc. I'm sure Jag has had access the RX-8 concept and prototype pieces for a couple years now. Not a lot unlike Saab getting the WRX to use via it's GM familial ties. I think the interesting thing to find out is if the RD6 as it sits is sitting on a RX-8 chassis or if it's really sitting on a shortened XJ platform. If anyone finds RD6 dimensions please post them here!

Other than the fact that it's ugly as sin, yeah it's a knockoff. Lord, that back end is horrible.

The way to tell if it's truly an 8 wannabe is to check out interior dimensions. As per the book we got with pre-orders, the design team started with interior dimensions to get X-amount of headroom for Y-length of cabin distance, then build the car around that. Their success at this is what makes the '8 truly unique. I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like the Jag rear headroom suffers, so this may be yet another "pretend to be a 4-seater" which are already too prevalent in the market.

hmmm, after a second closer look I'd more agree with you. The Jag does the same optical illusion as the 8, with the rear side windows/door frame sweeping down while the actual roofline remains high. It gives the illusion that rear headroom is dropping when it really doesn't, which lets them retain the classic sport-car look. Very clever, and I partially retract my earlier statement. Perhaps the jag rear seats aren't that bad after all.

Ugly, if you ask me, and isn't going to look any better over time. What's with all the stray lines? Why does it look like two seperate teams designed the front, middle and the back?

Actually, try this experiment: look at each 1/3 of the car while blocking the rest. The front end alone is not so bad and looks like a jag. The middle? Reminds me of the 350Z more than anything, with the high door and single up and down curve roofline. The back is a little bit RX8 (just the aborted wheel fender bulge), but the extreme termination at the back axle reminds me of a prowler. No trunk. Seems schizophrenic on the practicality issue.

Is it me or do European luxury car makers are completely lost when trying to style a sports car? This has got less shelf-life than a Z3.

Over on FreshAlloy.com (the Nissan/Infiniti equivalent to this forum), someone said the Jaguar RD6 "Looks like the bastard child of an FX and an RX-8. Hopefully it's horsepower figures come from the former. "

I think that's pretty funny!

I think this is one of those designs you either love or you hate -- like the BMW Z3/M Coupe. Personally, I *loved* the M Coupe; in fact, I was seriously considering buying one of those (used) before I decided on the RX-8. And I love the Infiniti FX. I hope Jaguar goes ahead and produces this concept -- though the rear hatch will have to open differently!

it certainly is one of those designs that will take some getting used to..

I hated the M coupe, but after about a year of seeing it on the road, I started liking it...

Here's the Opel Insignia concept from the Frankfurt Motor Show which I like a lot better!

Here's what Ford showed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, a four-seat luxury sports car featuring innovative technologies, and hinting at Ford's future design direction in Europe -- called the Ford Visos concept ...

It looks like the Ford Visos concept and the Jaguar RD6 share the same rear hatch...
