They can't have it both ways... so which is it?
"There are reports that Mazda’s rotary engine development team has grown from 30 members to 60 in the last year, meaning that the Hiroshima-based company is quite serious about a new Wankel."
vs.
"We know what we have to do. But as we must give priority to the next-gen MX-5, we only have a small band of guys working on the RX-9."

I think a lot of these random news bits here and there, is just so keep the media at bay and the public enthusiastic about it so that the car is "not forgotten". Like Toyota has no plans for an MR2 revival, so as you can see, there is absolutely ZERO news for years about any new MR2.
Mazda is definitely working on it, but they just gonna keep feeding you bits of conflicting info to generate marketing hype and speculation and conversation, nothing more.

I have a simple solution for them. Develop the next-gen MX-5 as they are doing, making sure to give it an ...ahem slightly more agressive stance, and at the same time do a real coupe version of said revision, not just a retractable hardtop. Put the 16X in it, change a few exterior bits here and there and christen it the next gen rotary for the masses.

"...complicated rear-door setup..." Complicated? I wouldn't exactly call it complicated.
"Smaller, lighter, cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and more fun to drive." Sounds good to me.
I can't decide if I like the artists impression or not though.
