The other Monster in the driveway

Since we had a nice 55 degree day today in the NE area I figured I would get the 78 camaro up and running. I've been working on her since I was 15 and so far everything is going great except the body, the rust is taking over. Probably in the next year or 2 I'm gonna find the shell to a 70's vette and drop the drivetrain into it since its a bored and stroked 350 to a 383 from a vette.

Every upload I tried failed so this is it.

Complete opposite sides of the coin!

I retuned the carb today and if it wasn't so rainy out I would take it for a spin. I'll post more pics of the engine next time I'm under it.

Spoke with the guy who built the motor and he told me the last 383 he did like this one is pushing 516hp and 464tq and once the right headers are on and has proper timing and a well needed tuneup I should be right there!

And the thought of finding an 8 shell has crossed my mind a few times but the 78 camaro body has some sentimental value.

Sentimental is priceless.

I bought my 1st car when I was 16. Yellow '69 Javelin.
A few years later I wrecked the front end, not too bad. My older brother, R.I.P., had an AMX and bought a '68 jav for parts with a good front end. He wouldn't sell the parts to me.
I let him and my brother-in-law talk me out of fixing it.
So my bro-n-law bought it off me, and my brother gave him the parts and helped him fix it. Jealous of baby bro, I guess.

Took me years to get over it, maybe deep down, I never have.

Keep your car and fix it up. You get rid of it, and you will probably regret it.

The camaro will probably never leave the family. My uncle who was like a father to me had a 78 camaro as his first car and he had a 383 stroker in it. I spend a good chunk of my early childhood in that camaro.

When I was 15 he bought this one, always wanting to replace his first car. (a sentiment all us car guys have, mines a 92 taurus SHO) We worked on it together and it was the first car I ever worked on. I spend a whole summer vacation with him under this camaro working on it. I spend weeks reading the owners manual cover to cover and his old mechanics books from when he went to auto mechanic school. This camaro taught me the basics of working on a car, and combined with my SHO that always broke down I gradually learned quite a bit.

My uncle wont be able to drive it for a few more years but I do plan to surprise him by fully restoring it by the time he can see it again.

I sold my 1968 Cougar XR7 for $500 to buy an 1983 RX7, not for need of cash, but room in the garage. Have regreted it ever since. Not buying the Mazda, selling the Cougar.

When my uncle gets the camaro back I'm gonna build a 454 and find something to drop it in!
